New products that Apple is expected to launch this year include the new iPhone 12 and Apple Watch 6. Typically, these products are announced at an Apple Event in September, however, the global pandemic has wreaked havoc on Apple's mighty supply chain, resulting in several new Apple products facing delays.
Apple's iPhone 12 is rumored to have several significant upgrades, including LiDAR and 120Hz adaptive refresh rate, with screen sizes ranging from 5.4-inch to 6.7-inch. The Watch Series 6 is expected to be more of an evolution than a revolution, adding a faster processor and blood oxygen sensor. There is the possibility of a nice improvement in battery life, if rumors of a micro-LED display prove true. The more interesting new Apple smartwatch is the Watch SE, which will be a budget version of the Series 6. These are only a few of the exciting products coming from Apple soon.
According to recent coverage by Reuters, Apple supply chain partners indicate that the iPhone 12, Apple Watch 6 and Watch SE will face delays. Broadcom, who manufactures wireless components, reported revenues down due to delays in production by "our large North American partner." Analysts seem to agree that this means Apple and the delayed product referenced is the iPhone 12. This matches leaks and rumors that have been circulating in the last few weeks. No surprises there, but further indications that the main Apple event will come around the middle of October.
The Apple Watch supply chain has also weighed in with information pointing to delays. According to DigiTimes, the new Apple Watch Series 6 and Watch SE will use a manufacturing process called SiP or system-in-package technology. This means chips are stacked vertically to allow more room within a product and greater freedom in design. This technology is being manufactured by ASE, who DigiTimes claims, suggested that production has just started. If true, this rules out the September release date that had previously been leaked on Twitter.
This year has made life difficult for market analysts and Twitter leakers. For both parties, their reputation and success depends upon accurate predictions, and often based on limited information. So far, predictions and leaks related to specifications have stayed the same, but dates seem to be shifting. That is to be expected since shipping and production is still largely reliant upon human activity. In the future, as everything becomes more automated, product releases may run more like clockwork. In the meantime, it seems September may not see any major Apple announcements. Although that does also mean that even more will be packed into October, with new models for iPhone, Apple Watch, possibly an update to AirPods, and a new product called AirTag.
