Can AirPods Be Connected To Two Devices At The Same Time?

While you cannot listen to two audio streams simultaneously from two different devices, Apple's AirPods do offer a good level of connectivity. For example, it is simple to switch between different Apple devices, and it is possible to connect to many different devices with a pair of AirPods, just not at the same time.

AirPods are Apple’s wireless headphones, and they pair effortlessly with any Apple device. They can also pair with other smartphones as well thanks to their general Bluetooth support. There are two generations of AirPods that have been released so far, as well as the AirPods Pro, which are not only water-resistant, but also noise-canceling.

Though Apple AirPods cannot receive audio input from two different devices simultaneously, they can be simultaneously connected to both an Apple Watch and an iPhone. When they are connected with both devices, the audio input will switch between the two devices depending on the user’s interactions. It is also possible to switch between the connected devices manually and this is especially easy when the devices the AirPods are switching between are linked to the same Apple Account. The process of switching takes seconds and can be done by holding the AirPods case open besides the device they are to connect with and waiting until the device recognizes the AirPods. Users can also always disconnect the AirPods from a device by going to the settings and selecting the AirPods, and choosing to disconnect.

Though it is not possible for AirPods to connect with two devices simultaneously, it is possible to connect two different AirPods to the same Apple Device using iOS 13. To do this, after connecting one of the AirPods normally, hold the other AirPod case near the device and hold down the button on the back of the AirPods until the light turns white. Then, select the option to AirPlay the sound from the AirPods that were originally connected.

It is unfortunate you cannot individually connect AirPods to different devices, but there are also very limited situations where that would be useful. For example, having two phones simultaneously streaming audio to one pair of AirPods is unlikely to be that great of an expereince. In spite of this limitation, AirPods still have an ability to connect and recognize many different devices, but it is somewhat limited by the constraints of Bluetooth.
