Fargo: 10 Worst Things Each Main Character Did | ScreenRant

It’s not exactly difficult to think of bad things that have happened in Fargo, seeing as the show’s premise reflects this. However, there are still things that are unforgivable even by this series’ standards. These are generally done by the villains, although the protagonists aren’t completely in the clear themselves.

It’s a testament to just how many horrible acts have been committed that certain ones can actually be singled out. These have to do with characters being unnecessarily cruel or making decisions that result in negative consequences to those around them. To this end, it’s worth checking out the worst things the main characters have done.

10 Lester Nygaard: Send His Wife To Her Death

If there’s one Fargo character who didn’t deserve to die, it will have to be Linda. Unlike Lester’s cruel first wife -- for whom you don’t feel bad even when she was murdered -- Linda was a total sweetheart. Lester used her gullibility to send her into his office to retrieve their passports, which was actually him making Linda bait for Lorne Malvo.

With Malvo lying in wait to shoot Lester inside the office, he assumed her to be his target and killed her. This was the decision that completely turned Lester into a monster and he became irredeemable. Following this act, the authorities continued to come closer to him, eventually leading to Lester’s demise when he tried to flee.

9 Lorne Malvo: Torment Milos For His Twisted Pleasure

Malvo is a character fans want to see return in the future even though he was a psychopathic killer. He would turn on his own employers just because he’d find it funny, and he did so with Stavros Milos. After learning that Don Chumph was blackmailing Milos, Malvo took over and made the whole thing sinister.

He took advantage of Milos’ religious nature and made him believe he was being punished by God in apocalyptic fashion. Eventually, Milos’ rash attitude to please God resulted in the inadvertent death of his son, all because Malvo found the whole thing amusing.

8 Dodd Gerhardt: Abuse His Daughter

Dodd Gerhardt is easily one of the most hated characters in the series. Not only was he a gangster who found any reason to kill, but he was also a misogynist who took pleasure in abusing his daughter. Dodd treated abuse as if it were a sport, using any situation to belittle her.

This got to the point where he even physically threatened her, doing so in full view of everyone else. Dodd’s emotional abuse was along the lines of hurling slurs and insults toward his daughter, something that ultimately led to her betraying the entire Gerhardt family.

7 Ray Stussy: Destroy His Brother's Marriage

Ray was an easily swayed man who held on to grudges so much that he refused to let them go in petty ways. Even when his brother Emmit willingly gave Ray the priceless stamp, the latter refused to take what he’d tried to steal the whole time.

The worst thing, though, was when he took on his brother’s appearance and made a tape with his girlfriend Nikki to pretend it was Emmit cheating on his wife. By sending this tape to her, Ray ensured his brother’s marriage was destroyed. This was something one would expect from the worst enemy, not one’s own brother.

6 V.M. Varga: Permanently Cripple Sy

Varga slowly took over Emmit’s entire company piece by piece, although he didn’t prefer hurting Emmit himself. He had a particular dislike for Emmit’s lawyer Sy, however, whom he even made drink his own urine as a power move.

Things got worse when Sy believed Emmit was going to jeopardize his position, so he mixed a drink with poison and coerced Sy to drink it. This put the latter in a coma for years and was still mentally damaged after coming out of it. Considering Varga fled shortly after the poisoning, Sy’s fate was all for nothing.

5 Nikki Swango: Take An Innocent Cop's Life

The Season 3 finale of Fargo is one of the series’ best episodes for finishing off the overarching plot. Here, Nikki met her demise when she was shot in the head by a cop. You can’t feel bad for her seeing as she was in the process of shooting him as well.

As it happened, Nikki was trying to kill Emmit when they were intercepted by the cop. Despite the man being innocent, Nikki attempted to kill him simply because he was in the way. This came back to haunt Nikki as the cop was able to shoot her before he was killed himself.

4 Peggy Blumquist: Get Ed Involved In Rye Gerhardt's Death

Peggy ran over Rye when the latter had caused a massacre at a diner. Rather than report this accident to the police, she convinced her husband Ed to cover the event up. This involved Ed, who was a butcher, to slice apart Rye’s body to hide his demise.

Unfortunately, the Gerhardt family caught wind of this and went after the Blumquists. In the end, it was Ed who died when he was shot by Hanzee. His blood is on Peggy’s hands as she was the one who made him go along with her plan, thereby causing herself to become a widow.

3 Hanzee Dent: Collateral Damage For His Own Cause

Given his quiet but calculating nature, Hanzee is among the most intelligent villains in Fargo. To some extent, fans can feel sympathy for the racial injustice he experienced, but Hanzee committed even worse crimes by starting a massacre that killed dozens.

He killed several innocent people purely because he wanted to track down the Blumquists. Most didn’t have to die since they gave Hanzee his required information, yet the guy still murdered these people and many more in the final shootout. This act took away any sympathy one might have felt for Hanzee.

2 Yuri Gurka: Violently Beat Nikki Up

In what is one of the scariest scenes in Fargo history, Yuri saw Nikki as a way to intimidate Sy and made her suffer. Upon finding her talking to Sy, Yuri assumed he was trying to betray Varga and lashed at Nikki so severely that she was rendered incapable of walking.

This lashing was in the literal sense as Yuri outright whipped her, all the while Nikki’s screams were heard.

1 Gus Grimly: Let Lorne Malvo Escape Out Of Fear

There are a lot of bad decisions that characters make in Fargo, and this one haunted Gus for over a year. Having caught Malvo speeding -- unbeknownst to Gus, Malvo had just killed the police chief -- Gus found himself being intimidated by the killer.

Malvo used his way with words to cause fear in Gus’ heart, to the point where he was paralyzed and didn’t attempt to stop the criminal before him. After escaping, Malvo committed countless more murders, all of which fell on to Gus since he had been too scared to do anything when he had the chance.
