Epic Games is removing Fortnite: Save The World from Mac devices due to the ongoing legal conflict between the developer and Apple. Fortnite was previously removed from the App Store following Epic's attempt to undercut Apple on profits from the in-game currency V-Bucks. Epic's legal action following the ban was swift, and to this day, it's sticking to its guns and insisting that Apple is maintaining an unfair monopoly on the app store.
Apple has been systematically purging Epic Games from its entire ecosystem. After banning Fortnite from iOS devices, the tech giant threatened to cut Epic's developer access entirely, which would make it impossible for the developer to update and maintain Unreal Engine on iOS. A judge prevented Apple from following through on this threat, but took no issue with the Fortnite ban. Not long after this ruling, Apple took an alternate course of action and banned every single Epic game from iOS.
Having successfully decimated Epic's presence on iOS, Apple is looking closer to home and beginning to target Fortnite on macOS. As was announced by Epic Games on the official Fortnite website, Apple has banned the developer from updating and maintaining its game on computers running Mac. Because of this new ban, Epic is completely removing Fortnite: Save The World from Apple computers. The developer claims that this is because the newest update causes severe bugs for players who are stuck with the older version. Since Apple isn't allowing Epic to address those bugs, the entire game mode will be made totally unavailable starting on September 23rd.
Despairing Fortnite fans can take some solace in the fact that the game's battle royale mode will still be playable on Mac devices, at least for the foreseeable future. It won't be receiving any further updates either, so Apple players should get used to the current version, because they'll be stuck with it for a while. To further comfort disappointed fans, Epic is offering full refunds for anyone who purchased the Founder's or Starting Packs and who played Save the World in the last year, and is also offering similar refunds on V-bucks spent on llamas during this time.
Ultimately, despite cries of significant financial harm from both Apple and Epic, the fans are the ones most hurt by this ongoing war. Apple users who love Fortnite find their prospects growing steadily slimmer the more the conflict rages on, and that's a real tragedy. Video games are supposed to be a chance for people to have fun and enjoy themselves. Now that Fortnite: Save The World is disappearing from Mac computers, a lot of people are going to be denied that chance.
