Game Of Thrones: 10 Things That Might Have Happened If Robb Stark Survived

Robb Stark's tragic death at the Red Wedding was one of the most shocking moments in HBO's Game of Thrones. During the first three seasons of the hit series, the Young Wolf leads a war against House Lannister across the Riverlands, seeking independence for the North and vengeance for his father's death. Robb's journey abruptly ends in season 3 when the Starks are betrayed by the Freys.

If the Red Wedding had never happened, or if Robb had survived, then Game of Thrones could have concluded with an entirely different endgame. As the first King in the North in over three centuries, the Young Wolf was an important figure in Westeros who could have changed the entire country's future.

10 The Starks Win The War

The War of the Five Kings could have ended differently if Robb Stark had survived his fatal moment at the Twins. The Lannisters defeated the Starks at the Red Wedding, only for Joffrey and Tywin to die soon after. Had Robb lived, he could have taken advantage of House Lannister's steady decline.

Robb's survival would have meant the ultimate revenge for House Stark. The Young Wolf would have avenged his father's death and crushed his enemies, all while winning autonomy for the North.

9 Robb Returns To The North

The King in the North spent little time in his home kingdom during the series. Ned's arrest prompted the Northern forces to march south against the Lannisters. Robb's absence left Winterfell vulnerable; the castle quickly fell to Theon Greyjoy and his Ironborn soldiers in season 2.

If Robb's devastating demise at House Frey's hands hadn't happened, he could have returned to his beloved country to purge the Ironborn presence. Winterfell would have remained fortified against the wars to come.

8 Making Peace With The Lannisters

An unlikely scenario could have featured a reluctant truce between the Starks and the Lannisters. Before his death, the war was looking bleak for Robb. His marriage to Talisa robbed him of valuable allies and his execution of Rickard Karstark ostracized him among many Northerners.

For his sister's safety and to save his House, Robb could have negotiated a truce with Tywin Lannister. The Hand of the King was pushed to war with the Young Wolf by Joffrey killing Ned; he would likely have welcomed a Stark surrender.

7 Robb Goes To The Wall

Another alternative outcome could have included Robb traveling to the Wall to join the Night's Watch. On the slim chance that Tywin would pardon him if he surrendered, the Lannister patriarch could have banished his rival from the Seven Kingdoms, sparing his life only to quell an uprising from the North.

Robb would have reunited with his half-brother/cousin Jon Snow, the future Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. Together, they could have united with Sansa in season 6 to take back Winterfell from the Boltons.

6 Fighting The White Walkers With Jon Snow

If Robb and Jon had reunited at the Wall then they could have stood together against the Night King in various battles, such as in "Hardhome" and "The Long Night." Inseparable as children, there is little doubt that Robb would allow Jon to journey alone in the dangerous lands in the North.

Robb didn't wield a Valyrian steel blade but he was a renowned battle commander with the fierce direwolf, Grey Wind, at his side. His presence would have been invaluable during Jon's various duels with the army of wights.

5 Robb Rescues Rickon

Robb's survival could have also saved the life of another Stark sibling. Rickon is separated from Bran in season 3 as he leaves his brother to retreat to safety with Osha. In season 6, Rickon and Osha are captured by Ramsay Bolton, who kills the Stark heir during the Battle of the Bastards.

The return of Robb could have inspired more loyalty among the Northmen. The Young Wolf could have rallied his forces for the second time in order to defeat the Boltons and save his brother.

4 No Crown For Sansa

The Young Wolf's survival drastically alters the endgame positions of the other Stark siblings. Primarily, Sansa would not have become Queen in the North while Robb still lived to bear the crown. In the scenario where Robb saves Rickon too, the youngest Stark would stand in the way of Sansa's inheritance.

Arya's last scene in the series finale might have unfolded differently, too. Robb's survival could have inspired the Hero of Winterfell to remain home in the North with the rest of her pack.

3 Robb Is Elected King Instead Of Bran

With the events of the Red Wedding altered, more viable contenders for the Iron Throne would have survived to see the series finale. Robb would have been a worthy claimant to the crown; the Young Wolf was the eldest child and heir of Ned Stark, as well as a proven leader of his people.

Robb's story could have trumped Bran's to qualify him as King of Westeros. The Young Wolf might have rejected the crown to return to Winterfell, or assumed power to lead the Seven Kingdoms into a better era.

2 War With The Dragon Queen

Robb perished long before Daenerys Targaryen returned to Westeros' shores. Had he lived, his path would have eventually crossed with the Dragon Queen's. Robb fought for Northern independence. His sovereignty could have put him at war with Daenerys, who wanted to reclaim all of Westeros.

Robb's forces were depleted by the war with the Lannisters, and wouldn't have fared well against the Targaryen queen's numbers. Alternatively, the Young Wolf could have brokered a marriage alliance with the Mother of Dragons.

1 The Starks Still Lose To The Lannisters

Even if Robb had survived the Red Wedding, there is no guarantee that he would have triumphed over House Lannister. The Young Wolf's chances of victory were looking bleaker by the day during season 3, whereas the Lannisters gained new power thanks to their alliance with the Tyrells.

Robb could have lived through his encounter with the Freys only to perish later on Tywin's orders. Joffrey in particular was determined to kill his enemy and would have done everything in his power as king to destroy House Stark.

Robb's survival is fun to speculate, though in typical Game of Thrones style, his alternate story could have ended equally dismal.
