"Cute" usually wouldn't be anyone's first choice when describing Game of Thrones' Red Wedding scene, but there's arguably no better way to put it when seeing a fan's recreation in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The HBO show was a cultural phenomenon that immersed viewers in the world of Westeros and the power struggle between different families as they fought for the Iron Throne.
Despite the many betrayals and bloody deeds that took place on Game of Thrones, the Red Wedding is one that continues to live on in infamy. The scene took place during season 3 and was orchestrated by Lord Walder Frey in an act of revenge against Robb Stark for refusing to marry into his House. As a result, Lord Frey welcomes the Starks for a feast under the sacred guest right, before sealing the doors and massacring them in the most brutal ways possible, from stabbing Talisa and her unborn baby to death to slitting Catelyn Stark's throat.
In spite of the Red Wedding's brutality, Reddit user rocketcatxx has managed to make the scene in Animal Crossing quite endearing. Rocketcatxx includes five different screenshots along with the post, showing various parts of the Red Wedding, which are juxtaposed with Animal Crossing recreations. The comparisons show Robb Stark standing up from his seat during the feast, Robb together with Talisa, Walder Frey at the head of the room, Catelyn threatening Joyeuse Erenford, and Robb crawling towards Talisa after she's been stabbed. Despite the bloodshed and violence of the Red Wedding, rocketcatxx has designed and positioned the Animal Crossing characters to perfection. While the Red Wedding led to a massive ripple-effect for the show, particularly with the deaths of Robb and Catelyn, two main characters in House Stark, more cynical fans think that it was all in vain. In particular, season 8 was almost universally panned by critics and fans alike, with reviewers citing uneven pacing and flat characters. As such, many accused creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss of purposefully rushing season 8, as there were other projects that they wanted to work on instead. Season 8's legacy, which even led fans to circulate a petition demanding for a season remake with new writers, arguably so tarnished the rest of Game of Thrones that it's somewhat difficult to look back on the Red Wedding with as much enthusiasm as before.
While Game of Thrones ended in 2019 on a sour note, it was still heralded as one of the most critically and commercially successful fantasy dramas on television during its run. While season 8 was disappointing, to say the least, Game of Thrones will be remembered for its incredible action scenes and complex storytelling, and fans like rocketcatxx will continue to carry the torch of keeping the memory of Westeros and the Starks' epic journey alive.
