Google's new Kids Space aims to help bring enjoyable kids content to select Android tablets. In general, tablets have long-since provided joy to young people by acting as an easy source of interactive fun that can be carried just about anywhere, and although this isn't the first time this technology has catered to a younger audience, Google has gone to some length to take security and fun a step further.
Finding ways to keep adolescents safe online is mentally and emotionally taxing. Some services like YouTube Kids are already designed to be suitable for entertaining young people, but there's only so much that any website can do alone from a safety and education perspective. Of course, there's always the option of combining the educational and recreational strengths of multiple websites or services, but where teachers can give direction to activities along a curriculum, many websites lack the same capability to direct children along a path that enriches as well as entertains.
The new Kids Space was inspired by the need to offer appropriate and enjoyable content for children and direct that experience too, especially given many have spent increased time at home because of the pandemic. More than just enjoyment, families understandably desire the benefits of educational activities too and Google has worked to provide all three with Kids Space. Taking the form of videos, games, applications and books, kids can explore Google's library and create their own avatar while surfing among a variety of online activities and checking out new recommendations geared to leading them to educational fun, so parents don't have to worry. According to Google, Kids Space will appear first on select Lenovo tablets, including the Smart Tab M10 HD Gen 2.
To build an environment safe, enjoyable and educational, Google took things beyond choosing the same old entertainment options. Tailored rubrics were designed by including the help of specialists in children's education as well as other academic experts to bring material focused on the fun and needs of children simultaneously, as well as bringing publishers aboard to provide hundreds of books for kids. The combined work of these experts is what enabled Google to pack literary works into the same Kids Space that houses the 'Watch' and 'Make' tabs that bring to the table activities which encourage young people to continue their enjoyment off-screen, instead of devoting attention solely to the tablet.
