Homelander's Only Weakness Is Psychological Attacks Says The Boys Showrunner

Showrunner Eric Kripke has revealed that Homelander's only weakness is psychological warfare on The Boys. The Boys, which premiered on Amazon Prime in 2019, quickly became a big hit for the network, garnering terrific reviews and audience feedback. Naturally, a season 2 was greenlit for the streaming service, which recently premiered its first three episodes of the new season on the platform. The Boys season 2 has received a notably warm reception from critics, currently resting at an impressive 97 percent critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Boys season 2 reunites audiences with the eclectic team of misfits aiming to expose evil superheroes, who are currently wanted by the government after trying to expose the corporation responsible for the misdeeds of these heroes. The Boys' season 2's cast shows the return of Jack Quaid, Karl Urban, Erin Moriarty, Laz Alonso, Tomer Capon, Karen Fakuhara, Chace Crawford, Jesse T. Usher, Dominque McElligott, Nathan Mitchell. Antony Starr reprises his role as Homelander, the leader of the superhero team known as The Seven. Since Homelander's powers are akin to that of Superman, fans have wondered if the character has any sort of kryptonite. Kripke has provided fans with an answer to that burning question.

In a new interview with Collider, showrunner Kripke has revealed what he thinks is Homelander's weakness on Amazon's The Boys. When asked if Homelander can actually be killed, Kripke responded by saying, "

“At the moment there aren’t many physical ones, but there’s so many psychological ones that that’s what we kind of lean to. Antony has said many times, and I agree, that Homelander is the weakest character in the show. So we’ve never really gotten into the ‘How do you stop him physically?’ But there are a lot of ways to stop him psychologically.

Kripke expands on these thoughts by saying,

"He finds his human vulnerability so hateful and he hates that part of him and he tries to subsume it, and yet it is part of who he is. And so he hates a part of him that he can’t ultimately control, and so that kind of leads to a snake’s nest of psychoses. At the moment, that is his current weakness.

After fans have watched The Boys season 1 and what is available of season 2 thus far, many have wondered how powerful Homelander really is. Throughout the course of the series, the character has rarely been confronted or overtaken, proving his physical prowess again and again. In fact, there are those who think Homelander is even scarier than Marvel villain Thanos. While the character may continue to pose a serious physical threat, the exploration of the relationship between him and his son in season 2 may reveal a chink in the hero's armor, making him psychologically vulnerable as a result.

The Boys season 2 has gotten off to a tremendous start, continuing to showcase a lovable irreverence and considerable entertainment value that rivals that of season 1. Homelander, one of the series' standout characters, continues to impress and engage, unveiling new layers that allow the character to become far more than a generic villain within the scope of the show. Hopefully, season 2 will answer a fair amount of questions surrounding Homelander as it progresses. While the character may not have a physical weakness at this time, the fact he can possibly be defeated psychologically opens the door for a myriad of exciting narrative possibilities going into the rest of season 2. Regardless, Homelander remains one of the most magnetic characters on The Boys, which only shows signs of improvement in its opening run of episodes on Amazon Prime.
