These flashbacks are particularly noteworthy when they effectively make a joke or situation stand out. Seeing as the whole story is one big flashback, the fact that a few of these have been so good make them worthy of mention. With that in mind, here are 10 flashbacks from How I Met Your Mother, ranked.
10 Lily Chasing Marshall's Date
Marshall and Lily’s breakup was one of the more heartbreaking moments in How I Met Your Mother. The good thing, though, was it gave some funny scenes when they were single. This flashback showed Lily chasing Marshall’s date Chloe.
After spotting her, Lily used her jacket to shade herself from the rain but made herself look like a hunchback. After hurting her foot, she started to limp and looked even more deranged. The hilarity continued when Lily put on a strange voice to call out to Chloe, and all this combined made for two parallel flashbacks told from Chloe and Lily’s point of view.
9 Ted's Sleepless In Seattle Reenactment
Ted’s relentless pursuit of some of his romantic interests has become one of the most hated elements for fans. His hopelessly romantic nature, though, has been the source of a lot of jokes. On this occasion, Robin mentioned that she saw Ted playing with a model of the Empire State Building, which he denied.
The flashback revealed why he did so, as Ted was seen reenacting the final scene from Sleepless in Seattle. Not only that, but he even did the voices of the characters. Funnier still was Marshall’s response, who couldn’t believe that Ted had yet again done the same reenactment, meaning this was a recurring habit.
8 Robin's Secret Activities
There are a lot of mistakes Robin made that people can learn from. This flashback also qualifies, although its bizarre nature still leaves questions. As recalled by Marshall, Robin called him over to an alley for a favor, no questions asked.
Out of nowhere, Robin fell into Marshall’s arms, following which several supposedly female assassins in brightly colored suits chased after the duo. Robin herself was in this questionable attire, and the mystery of this event is what makes this such a hilarious flashback.
7 All The Interventions
There’s not just the one intervention that can be pointed out as the best since all of these have put situations into hilarious contexts. These range from Lily’s fake British accent to Robin’s excessive tan and Marshall’s ridiculous hat.
Perhaps the funniest instance of using a flashback for an intervention was the one where the gang agreed they were having too many interventions -- essentially an intervention for intervention. This flashback was only a few seconds long but succeeded in its comedy.
6 Robin And Lily's Fight
The genius of this flashback was that it showed a different result to what was implied. The idea was to explain how a hole was made in the apartment wall, flashing back to Lily and Robin. Here, a drunk Robin delivered a hilarious quote when threatening Lily, which caused the latter to snap.
The two girls then engaged in a short brawl that was broken up by Ted. This ended up angering Barney, who was infuriated that a girl fight was broken up and promptly punched the wall. Nobody would’ve expected this to be the reason for the hole, and it was a superb use of the flashback.
5 Barney's Transformation
Shannon is one of the most hated characters on How I Met Your Mother. She still gets credit for making Barney as awesome as he became, as heartbreak led to his change in attitude. When the gang couldn’t understand how Barney went from hippie to suited up, this flashback was shown.
Although the result was just a guy in a suit, it was shown in such a way that one would think a new Terminator model was being created. Full with ominous music and edgy camera cuts, Barney was transformed into his trademark look in appropriately awesome fashion.
4 Classic Schmosby Meltdowns
How I Met Your Mother is underrated when it comes to the soundtrack department, as many quality songs have been produced. One of these showed up in flashbacks detailing Ted’s meltdowns at the wedding ceremonies of his high school friends.
The joke wouldn’t have worked had it not been told in a flashback, as Ted had mildly put it that his wedding toasts hadn’t gone well. The flashback shows just how bad it was, with Ted’s repeated crying became an internet meme with a “Classic Schmosby” song that remixed his weeping into tune.
3 How Barney Met Marshall
The dynamic between Marshall and Barney always had to do with the great contrast in their personalities. While the innocent Marshall tended to be bemused by Barney’s antics, their first meeting had Marshall outsmart him.
As shown in a flashback, Barney tried to get Marshall to cheat on Lily the moment he met him, not knowing the girl he pointed out was Lily herself. Seizing his opportunity, Marshall pretended he was an ace as he kissed Lily upon seeing her, making Barney believe Marshall was a master at picking up girls.
2 Marshall's Fight With His Brothers
This was another great example of how a flashback could be used to bring two narratives together. Ted and Barney’s interpretation of Marshall’s fight with his brothers hilariously made the Erickson’s look like sissies, only for the real flashback to arrive later on.
This one was far more violent, featuring Marshall and his brothers beating the heck out of each other. The joke was that nobody would’ve expected this level of brutality from such nice guys, especially after the episode had built-up Marshall as being such a softie.
1 How Ted Met The Mother
Sure, there was a lot to hate about in that finale, but the actual moment about meeting the Mother was done to perfection. This was even more poignant due to the narration stating how every happy memory for Future Ted had the Mother, before flashing back to their meeting.
The beauty of the flashback was that it referenced many other moments that had led to Ted and the Mother’s union. This was easily the best use of a build-up for any flashback, as the scene conveyed everything from light-hearted moments to a sense of fulfillment.
