THQ Nordic is offering a 50 percent Steam discount on Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning to anyone who owns the original game on Steam. Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was an action RPG from 2012. The game boasted lore created by bestselling fantasy novelist R. A. Salvatore, and design work from Ken Rolston, lead designer of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Well-known comic book artist Todd McFarlane provided the art.
Despite the huge talent behind the game, it was far from the success it could have been. A lot of players complained that the game world was too vast and empty, like an MMORPG without the online component. While the gameplay itself was solid, it felt awfully similar to an Elder Scrolls game, probably due to the influence of Ken Rolston. This was an obstacle, however, because the game had released mere months after The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, a massive hit that defined the RPG video game genre and is considered to this day one of the best games of all time by many. While Kingdoms of Amalur wasn't a bad game, it simply couldn't compete. THQ Nordic purchased the rights to the game in 2018 and announced a full remaster titled Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning, in an attempt to bring the cult classic to a broader audience. This remaster will be coming out on September 8th.
The community manager for THQ Nordic took to the Steam forums recently to discuss what the upcoming release of the remaster means for fans who own the original game. Anyone who already owns Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning on Steam will be offered half off the remaster when it releases next week. This sale applies to both the standard edition of the game and the Fate Edition, which includes an expansion set to release next year. The sale is also compatible with the 10 percent discount the game will receive at launch, so early birds who own Kingdoms of Amalur can get a total of 60 percent off of the remaster. The sale will last until November.
This is a pretty substantial discount, and a lot of fans have reacted positively to it, but not all. Some owners of Kingdoms of Amalur think that even half off or more is too much, and have refused to partake. Some think it should even be offered for free as an upgrade, similar to what Bethesda did with Skyrim Special Edition a few years ago. It's not hard to see their point, but the situation is far more complicated than Bethesda's. THQ Nordic, after all, had nothing to do with the original game, and likely isn't at liberty to offer Re-Reckoning for free. A 50 percent discount is already a very generous deal, and people complaining about it sound an awful lot like they're looking a gift horse in the mouth.
The future of Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning is uncertain. The original game had a lot of potential, and there's every possibility that THQ and developer Kaiko will do it justice and build on that promise. At the same time, the game has a very rocky past, and its proximity to Skyrim wasn't the only reason it underperformed back in 2012. RPG fans are just a few days away from seeing how the remaster fares. While it's unlikely to hit the same heights as Skyrim, Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning still has a solid chance to redeem itself.
Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on September 8th, 2020.
