Phil and Claire Dunphy are one of the best couples of Modern Family. The show focuses on a modern family dynamic with multiple clashing personalities and situations, but love always comes out on top. Phil and Claire are two very different individuals but are the perfect example of how opposites attract.
With two consuming careers and three kids, one of the ways Phil and Claire reconnect is by created alter egos to spice up their love life: Clive Bixby and Julianna. Julianna is a mysterious temptress who always surprises Clive, and Clive is a businessman by day and lover by night.
10 Julianna's Coat Gets Stuck In The Escalator
In "My Funky Valentine," Phil and Claire create their infamous roleplay characters, Clive Bixby and Julianna. The two "meet" at a hotel bar where they proceed to pick each other up. To spice up the evening, Julianna takes off her dress and keeps her coat on for suspense. She gives the dress to Clive and the two exit the restaurant and head for their hotel room.
However, while the couple is on the escalator, Julianna's coat gets stuck. They run into all sorts of people they know, including Jay and Gloria. Julianna transforms back into Claire when she sees her dad and she becomes mortified that she could potentially be standing naked in public.
9 Julianna Calls Clive From The Restaurant
In the episode "Bixby's Back," Claire and Phil realize that last year's Valentine's Day festivities got too out of hand and opt for dinner as themselves instead. But when Claire realizes that she and Phil are blending in with the older crowd, she decides to spice it up.
Claire slips away from the table and calls Phil from the bar as Julianna. Hilariously, Phil doesn't know who Julianna is and tells her she has the wrong number. Claire has to call Phil back and beg him not to hang up because she wants him to leave his "wife" for Julianna.
8 Clive Walks Into The Wrong Hotel Room
While at the hotel, Julianna sneaks away and gives Clive her room key. Without looking, Phil takes the hotel key next to him but it turns out to be the wrong one; he takes the stranger's key next to him.
Clive enters the hotel room and strips down to his underwear, posing provocatively on the bed. With rose petals and champagne, Clive anxiously waits for Julianna to arrive. But when Julianna walks into her hotel room and sees that Clive is not on the bed waiting for her, they both realize that there's been a room mix-up. An elderly woman walks in, finds Phil lying on the bed and kicks him out.
7 Claire Faints As Julianna
In another episode, Clive and Julianna are mingling at a hotel bar, but before things get too steamy Julianna fainted. As it turns out, this wasn't an act — Claire fainted from a pre-existing health issue that she wasn't aware of, Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome.
Claire is hospitalized but feels herself after being looked after. Phil, on the other hand, is scared out of playing Clive. Once the two get home, Claire turns back into Julianna and wants a full night of romance, but Phil isn't in the mood to become his alter ego. Claire spends the night trying to seduce her husband while he hides from her.
6 Clive's Slow Striptease
In another anniversary gift, Phil leaves Claire a small video of his affection. Shown on a projection screen, Phil (as Clive) strips down to his boxers and tells Julianna to be ready for an evening of romance, but the video is cut short when the kids enter the room. Seeing Claire scurry to cover up her husband's parts is textbook Julianna and Clive. These two always get into spontaneous adventures.
5 Julianna Surprises Clive With The Night Of His Life
In the episode "Do You Believe In Magic," Phil is ready to turn into Clive but doesn't think Claire has what it takes to become Julianna. He even tells her secretary to call him Clive instead of Phil. She promises him that she has a romantic night planned for the two but his dreams are shot down when he hears Claire panicking about finding a dinner reservation. Luckily for him, it's all a ruse. Claire had a beautiful night on the town and a magic trick lined up the entire time and is just throwing Phil off her scent.
4 Clive's Cousin, Claude
In the episode "Paris," the whole gang goes to Paris to celebrate Jay's achievement award in the closet industry. In his talking head, Phil confesses that he can't go on the trip because of work, but this is all a lie. He ends up flying to Paris and transforming into Clive's cousin, Claude. As Claude, he was hoping to make this trip to Paris one of his and Julianna's most romantic yet. The trip doesn't go as planned after they meet an ex of Claire's, but it's fun to see the French version of Julianna and Clive — or Claude.
3 Clive & Julianna Teach Jay & Gloria How To Spice It Up
In the episode "Written In The Stars," Phil tells Jay that he needs to rethink his Valentine's Day plans. Worried that he's not giving Gloria everything she deserves, Jay gets a lesson in wooing his wife thanks to Clive Bixby. Phil and Claire tell Jay that they spice it up through roleplay on most loving holidays and introduce him to their alter egos. Jay, of course, is disgusted but decides to try it out anyway. Jay and Gloria have a fun time pretending to be other people and Clive and Julianna pretended to be teenagers again.
2 The Surprising Rooftop Experience
When Julianna is feeling frisky, she takes the evening by storm and shocks Clive into silence. He stands there in awe of everything Julianna does. This continues when Julianna steals a bottle of champagne from the bar and makes out with him in the clear elevator on their way to the rooftop pool. With Clive staring at the night sky and cold pool, he soon realizes that Julianna is skinny-dipping. Clive's expression throughout the entire episode is totally classic.
1 Claire Can't Compete With Julianna
After an intoxicating night as Clive and Julianna, Julianna transforms back into Claire and is looking forward to a night spent at the hotel. Phil, on the other hand, can't let go of Julianna. Instead of talking to Claire, he keeps bringing up Julianna. This makes Claire feel like Phil is losing interest in her and only fancies Julianna. She begins talking in a gross way to turn Phil off but it doesn't work. Luckily the two talk it out and make up as they always do.
