Troian Bellisario's Pretty Little Liars character, Spencer Hastings, is intelligent and beloved. She's one of the main characters who search for their lost best friend, Alison DiLaurentis (Sasha Pieterse), and with her witty and brilliant personality, she's ready to take on the challenge. Of course, that doesn't mean that Spencer doesn't struggle with a lot over the years.
While fans weigh the pros and cons of a PLL reboot, it's fun to look back at everything that Spencer went through on the original show. From falling in love to getting caught in A's dark game, Spencer really struggled over the show's seven seasons.
10 Spencer Fell For Melissa's Fiance And Experienced A Lot Of Family Tension
Melissa is a tough character to like and she and Spencer fought over the affections of the same guy in the first season: Melissa's fiance Wren (Julian Morris).
In the early days of the show, Spencer was a young girl intent on doing well in school and trying to deal with her family, as she was always competitive with her older sibling.
9 Spencer And Toby Kissed And Fell In Love
Spencer and Toby Cavanaugh were always good together, and as the first season went on, Spencer kissed Toby, played by Keegan Allen, and started falling for him.
This was the beginning of the character's transformation as she experienced the thrills of first love and her life started getting more complicated than ever before.
8 Spencer Discovered Jason Is Her Sibling
It was crazy when, in the third season, Spencer discovered that Ali's brother Jason (Drew Van Acker) is her brother, too.
This was a big deal as Spencer started to pull away from her family at this point. She didn't feel that she could trust them and she definitely didn't feel all warm and fuzzy toward them after they kept such a huge secret from her.
7 Spencer Slept With Toby, Then Learned He Was On The A Team
Just like it was really tough for Aria Montgomery (Lucy Hale) to learn that her boyfriend Ezra Fitz (Ian Harding) was on the A Team and that he had been seeing Ali romantically, it was awful when Spencer started wondering if Toby was involved with A.
In the third season, Spencer learned that her one true love was on the A Team, and she was understandably really upset. This was a turning point for her as she had to stay away from him and protect her heart, and it was even more emotional as they had also just slept together that season.
6 In Season 4, Spencer Ended Up At Radley Because Of Addiction Issues
In the fourth season of PLL, Spencer spent some time at Radley, which was terrifying to watch.
Radley is one of the main settings on the show, and while it had been transformed into a fabulous, pretty hotel near the end of the show's run, it was still a mental institution at this point in the story. Spencer started taking too many pills and wondered if she was to blame for the teenage girl who was buried alive in the grave that they thought Ali was in. She started thinking of herself as a bad person instead of a good one, and this really messed up with her head.
5 Spencer Found Out Melissa's Secret, Which Rocked Her World
In the fifth season, Melissa told Spencer that she was responsible for Bethany Young being put in the grave and being buried alive.
This was another transformation for the character, as Spencer had been wondering about what really happened that night, but she wouldn't have necessarily thought that Melissa was to blame.
4 After The Dollhouse, Spencer Struggled With Her Mental Health Again
The PLL episodes that took place in the creepy dollhouse really got to Spencer, as after the liars were saved and brought back home, she struggled with her mental health once again.
Spencer started using pills again and also started having trouble sleeping. She was becoming someone who she didn't like or recognize, but it makes sense that this would happen as it was such a traumatizing experience.
3 Spencer Fell For Her Best Friend's Ex
Love triangles may be present on many teen dramas but the situation that Spencer, Caleb Rivers (Tyler Blackburn), and Hanna Marin (Ashley Benson) found themselves in near the end of the show was TV gold.
Spencer and Caleb definitely didn't think that they would fall in love, but as they bonded in Washington, they realized that they felt something between them. This was tough for Spencer, who had to decide whether her friendship with Hanna mattered more than her feelings for Caleb. She felt like a real jerk during this time.
2 She Tried To Be A Lobbyist In Washington
Spencer was always super smart and always had career ambitions.
In the sixth season, she went to Washington to try to be a lobbyist, and it was good for her to leave Rosewood and try to see what the real world was like. She was growing up and it seemed like she could finally leave the whole mess of "A" and Ali's disappearance behind her.
1 Spencer Had To Come To Terms With Having An Evil Twin
By the series finale, Spencer found that she had an evil twin named Alex Drake. This really changed everything for her.
This was a big deal for so many reasons. For one thing, the mystery was finally solved and done with. For another, Spencer learned that her twin had been pretending to be her for quite a while, and it was scary to think about. Thankfully, Spencer lived happily ever after with her soulmate Toby and the liars could all put the past behind them (for real this time).
