Roomba i3+ Is Now The Cheapest iRobot Self-Emptying Robot Vacuum

Cleaning can be a real hassle and, while they're not perfect, robot vacuums can save a lot of time. However, when one gets full and no one is around to empty it, it becomes a bit of a waste. That's why iRobot came out with Roombas that can empty themselves as they recharge. While these were expensive units, iRobot now has a more economical option in the form of the Roomba i3+, which can be picked up for under $600.

While there are a lot of different companies that make similar products, it is iRobot's Roomba that has became synonymous with robot vacuum cleaners. Founded in 1990, iRobot originally developed military and policing robots but branched into the home cleaning market in 2002 with the first Roomba. Today, the Massachusetts-based company is the leading global consumer robot company, having sold more than 30 million robots worldwide. Its current robot vacuum line, spans from the Roomba 600 Series, which starts at around $250 in the U.S., to the premium s9+ which is north of $1,000.

In contrast, the Roomba i3+ is the third-most advanced robot vacuum cleaner in iRobot's lineup, following the s9+ and i7+. The plus sign indicates these Roombas ship with the Clean Base Automatic Dirt Disposal, a docking station combined with a garbage bin that can hold up to 60 days' worth of debris. It's also lined with a special vacuum cleaner bag that can trap up to 99-percent of pollen and mold. If one of these Roombas becomes full while cleaning, it returns to the Clean Base and empties itself as it recharges. If the floor still needs cleaning after it has recharged, the Roomba will resume its work. All three of these Roombas are quite powerful robot vacuums but the new i3+ is much more reasonably priced. iRobot is selling it for $599.99 (or C$749.99 in Canada). This is $200 (C$250 in Canada) cheaper than the Roomba i7+ and $500 (C$600 in Canada) less expensive than the s9+.

The Roomba i3+ cleans back and forth in neat rows as it navigates the different rooms of a home and works on both hard floors and carpets. Its filter can trap 99-percent of dust mites, mold, pollen as well as cat and dog allergens. Like the Roomba i7+, the i3+ has 10 times the suction power of the 600 Series and uses dual rubber brushes that clean together and a special edge-sweeping brush to get at corners. (In contrast, the Roomba s9+ has 40 times the suction power of the 600 Series. It also uses a more-advanced corner bush and does a deeper clean of carpets.)

The Roomba i3+ can be controlled from anywhere, using the iRobot Home app, which is available for both Android and iOS, or by voice, when its paired with devices that use Google Assistant or Amazon's Alexa.  The app can also make personalized cleaning recommendations. Though, the Roomba i3+'s cleaning controls aren't quite as versatile as the i7+ and s9+'s, which allows users to create room maps and keep-out zones. The i3+ can also work in tandem with the company's Braava jet m6 robot mop. When the robot vacuum has finished vacuuming the floor, the Roomba i3+ will send a signal to alert the Braava jet that it's time to get mopping. Overall, while not super cheap, the Roomba i3+ could be a good investment. But for those who feel $599.99 is still too much, they can purchase the Roomba i3 instead (the same robot vacuum without the Clean Base) for $399.99 (or C$499.99 in Canada).
