Streets of Rage 4 received a new balancing update today, in celebration of the brawler reaching an impressive 1.5 million downloads. The game is the latest in the long-running Sega series, and the first appearance of the franchise since Streets of Rage 3 in 1994.
Streets of Rage 4 launched in October 2019, but the game didn't have a full gameplay reveal until March of that year. Despite the reveal coming so close to the game's release, fans of the Streets of Rage series were already hyped for its release since the beat 'em up was first announced in 2018. The long-awaited sequel carries on the traditions of the franchise with its trademark gameplay and retro-inspired visual style. However, the title does have a few upgrades over the originals, including a brand new Battle Mode that allows players to compete directly with three other players.
A huge balancing update for Streets of Rage 4 is now available, with developer Dotemu confirming that patch version 1.03 has released across all platforms. This is one of the biggest updates for the beat 'em up since it launched in April. The update brings a wide range of changes, but the biggest come to Streets of Rage 4's main playable characters. The likes of Axel, Adam, Cherry, Floyd, and Blaze have all been tweaked to improve their movement speed and special abilities. Some enemies and stages have also seen alterations to help make Streets of Rage 4 a fairer experience to play, while a collection of infinite combo loops have been removed entirely. The studio also noted that owners of the physical edition of the game for PlayStation 4 cannot download the update yet. However, Dotemu said it is "sorting out an issue that prevents the patch from going live" and will keep players updated.
Even before Dotemu revealed that Streets of Rage 4 had sold 1.5 million titles, there was a good indication that the game had been successful. Just last month, the developer announced that it was working on extra content in the form of downloadable expansions. However, the studio is being careful not to rush any future DLC and is still considering its plans for what will be included in any add-ons. Fans, though, have been vocal about the desire for extra stages and characters.
Considering that the Streets of Rage franchise had been dormant for almost two decades, it is surprising to see just how successful Streets of Rage 4 has been. It is a testament to not only the fondness many people have for the franchise, but also the quality of the new sequel that it has been able to sell so many units in just a few months. The fact that Dotemu continues to regularly update the game is also reassuring, as it suggests that the franchise is in safe hands for the future.
Streets of Rage 4 is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
