There’s no question that The Simpsons is one of the most influential pop culture phenomena of the 20th and 21st centuries. After all, it is unmatched in terms of its longevity, and it's staying power is all the more remarkable because it’s an animated series. There's just something about it that seems to appeal to the American mindset.
Given its extraordinary run, it’s not at all surprising that a number of fans have turned their considerable artistic talents to creating fan art that is almost as delightful as the show itself.
10 Bart & Linda
There are some mashups that are good, and then there are some that are great. This one definitely falls into the latter category. How could it not, when it features two of the best animated characters in the history of the form, Bart Simpson and Louise Belcher from Bob's Burgers.
It’s hilarious to think about all of the mischief these two characters could get into. Poor Marge and Linda would definitely have their hands full if these two ever met.
9 The Nightmare Before Homer
There's just something great about a mashup that manages to capture the beauty of two beloved cultural objects, in this case, The Simpsons and The Nightmare Before Christmas.
Though they might not appear that similar on the surface, both of these texts actually have a lot of heart. This artist has, most notably, managed to capture the profound love that inexplicably exists between Marge and Homer, and one can’t help but be moved by their outward display of affection.
8 Homer’s Paradise
Homer Simpson is, without a doubt, one of the most gluttonous characters to have ever appeared in an animated show (or, really, any show). He has a particular love of donuts, and this piece of fan art manages to capture the absolute joy that Homer would feel if he was surrounded by the food that he so dearly loves.
But then again, who wouldn’t be in a bit of a coma if they were surrounded by the most delicious type of junk food?
7 The Best Mashup
It’s hard to think of two things funnier than The Simpsons and Ghostbusters, so it makes sense that some particularly clever fan artist decided to put the two worlds together.
It’s rather hilarious to think about the ways in which these animated characters would contend with the sorts of things routinely faced by the Ghostbusters, and it somehow seems like they wouldn’t be very competent at their jobs and the ghosts would almost certainly get the upper hand.
6 The Next Best Mashup
It’s hard to think of two shows that more represent the ethos of the 1990s than The Simpsons and Seinfeld. After all, they were on the air roughly at the same time, and they even premiered at almost the same time.
It's obvious why this piece of fan art is great. The artist has done a fantastic job of meshing the characters from these two series, somehow managing to capture the distinctive mannerisms of both.
5 The World’s Scariest Fish
Blinky is, without a doubt, one of the most unsettling creatures that lives in Springfield. Of course, he’s supposed to be a reminder of the terrible consequences of nuclear runoff, but even so, it’s always vaguely unsettling to see this little mutated piece of nature.
How fitting, then, that this clever artist has mapped this three-eyed fish into the very popular (and very charming) Pixar film Finding Nemo. One can’t help but wish that Blinky would remain unfound.
4 Lisa Granger
Mashups are, clearly, one of the most popular forms of fan art, a means by which fans of different series can bring their beloved objects together into the same universe. Sometimes, the mashups really seem to have preordained, because the characters involved just seem to be made for it.
In this case, that’s Lisa and Hermione Granger of Harry Potter. It’s hard to think of two characters that are more suited to one another than these two, and it certainly helps that they are two of the smartest young women in popular culture.
3 That’s A Nope
Part of what makes The Simpsons work is that it’s animated. It allows the creators to really play with what the characters look like and because they are not real, it allows the audience to enter into a state of suspended disbelief. However, every so often, a fan artist decides to translate these zany characters into real life, and the results can often be very disturbing.
This particular piece of fan art is a great example of how this translation is, to put it mildly, a mixed blessing, for while the detail is extraordinary, the overall look is incredibly disturbing.
2 A Fitting Tribute
Phil Hartman was one of those comedic talents that only comes along once in a generation. An expert at both physical comedy and voice acting, his turns as Troy McClure and many other characters in the series were significant highlights of the early seasons.
This artist has created a little bit of a memorial to him. Looking at it, one can remember with a poignant nostalgia the many joyous moments he brought to show, while also wondering what might have been, had he not died so tragically.
1 Greased Homer
The bond between Marge and Homer is one of the centerpieces of the show, and it has been from the very beginning. There’s no question that they are one of the best couples in the history of television, and they love one another unconditionally. And, considering what a dunce Homer is, this is no small accomplishment.
What better way to pay tribute to this love story for the ages than by translating them into Grease, a musical that also has, at its center, a beautiful love story.
