The Walking Dead's Final Season Needs To Answer These Questions

The news broke today that one of AMC's most successful, longest-running drama series, The Walking Dead, will conclude with its 11th season, set to premiere in 2022. After season 10, the show's penultimate season will wrap up in early 2021 with a few "bonus" episodes spawned due to COVID, The Walking Dead's final season will premiere the following year, with an extended run of 24 episodes.

This announcement sent shockwaves throughout the series' ever-growing fandom, but fear not, The Walking Dead as we know it may be coming to an end, but the announcement did not come without the information that the series will live on through a spinoff that is currently slated for release in 2023. This spinoff is to star Norman Reedus (Daryl Dixon) and Melissa McBride (Carol Peletier) and will be helmed by none other than showrunner Angela Kang. The Walking Dead franchise will live on through its fifth TV show, but there are several questions that the final season of the original show will have to answer in order to give fans their well-deserved closure.

10 Will The Others Find Out About Rick?

In the 13th episode of The Walking Dead's 10th season, "What We Become", the big reveal that Rick Grimes was actually alive was dropped when Michonne found evidence on Virgil's island. In that same episode, Michonne left everything and everyone behind to pursue Rick, and only Judith and RJ were let in on her plan.

Ever since then, the big question has been: when will everyone else find out that Rick is actually alive? Depending on what happens with the Rick Grimes movies, the other characters will hopefully find out about their former leader's fate before the series concludes.

9 Connie's Fate

The Walking Dead is no stranger to cliffhangers, even to the point of causing audience revolt. Every season of the series includes at least one cliffhanger pertaining to a character's fate, and in season 10, it was Connie's life that hung in the balance.

Lauren Ridloff's character, who was only recently introduced back in season 9, quickly became a beloved favorite among many fans. So when Connie got trapped in the collapsed remnants of a cave at the end of TWD's midseason premiere, fans were eager to learn what became of her. The wait has gone on longer than anyone expected, due to the delay of the season 10 finale.

8 Ezekiel's Illness

Early in season 10, it was revealed that Ezekiel had fallen ill with self-diagnosed thyroid cancer. This immediately meant that the character was living on numbered time, and matters only got worse for Ezekiel after Siddiq was murdered in episode 7, "Open Your Eyes".

Left with no doctor, Ezekiel's only option was to join Eugene on his journey to meet Stephanie, in hopes that there might be a doctor in this mysterious place. But with the show ending, fans will want answers on how exactly Ezekiel's story ends and if he overcomes his illness.

7 Where Will Dog Go?

Being introduced in the seventh episode of the series' ninth season, Daryl's Malinois, simply known as "Dog", has arguably joined the ranks of the show's most beloved characters. So this begs the question of what will become of Dog once The Walking Dead is over.

It's likely that Dog will go wherever Daryl goes, but at this point, nothing is certain. The fate of The Walking Dead's only canine character is one that fans will need to know. And if Dog does not end up being a part of the new spinoff, countless hearts will be broken.

6 The Aftermath Of The Whisperer War

Due to COVID delays, fans are still waiting for The Walking Dead's season 10 finale, ominously titled "A Certain Doom", to shed some light on what the survivors' lives will look like after the Whisperer War. This major event will likely be resolved in the season finale, which premieres on AMC October 4th, but afterward, there will still be many unanswered questions.

The Whisperer War will probably not be over without some fatalities. Along with that, the fate of Alexandria and Oceanside - two of the only communities still standing - remains to be seen.

5 Will Eugene Get To Meet Stephanie?

One of season 10's more significant subplots was an unlikely romance for Eugene. After struggling with his feelings for Rosita for years, Eugene finally took his chance to move on from his unrequited love for his long-time friend, when he met Stephanie.

Eugene technically has not actually met Stephanie - they only spoke to each other on the post-apocalyptic version of the phone. The penultimate episode of season 10 saw Eugene and his friends on a mission to finally meet Stephanie - but will they succeed?

4 Will Negan Be Fully Redeemed?

In seasons 9 and 10, the show held a prominent focus on redeeming their notorious villain, Negan, and slowly integrating him into the makeshift societies that the survivors had built. It was in season 10 that Negan's redemption arc was put into full swing, most recently with him killing the Whisperers' leader, Alpha, and delivering her head to Carol.

In episode 15, "The Tower", Negan seemed to be part of the team - at least, he was no longer in his cell. However, fans are still wondering whether he will be "one of the good guys" by the end of the series.

3 What Will Happen To Lydia?

The fates of every character on the show that's not Daryl or Carol is now up in the air, but Lydia is perhaps the biggest question mark here. In season 9, Daryl became Lydia's guardian and brought her to Alexandria in order to protect her from Alpha.

If there are still other survivors by the time The Walking Dead concludes, it will be interesting to find out whether Lydia leaves the show with Carol and Daryl, or stays back; similar to Enid's decision to stay at the Hilltop after Maggie left with Hershel in season 9.

2 Will They Find The Commonwealth?

It's a solid theory among fans that the show will take place primarily at the Commonwealth after the Whisperer War has wrapped up. This is a similar route to the one the graphic novel series took in the same timeline.

The Commonwealth was a very significant location in the comics. It was a large network of communities and was eventually helmed by Maggie, so of course, fans of the show and comics are eager to see the onscreen adaptation of the area. But now the question is, will they get to see it?

1 Everybody Dies?

It's natural to assume that some sort of cataclysmic event must prompt Carol and Daryl to go out on their own - but that's purely an assumption. At this point, there are multiple theories surrounding how this situation will come about, and the most popular is that many or all of the other characters meet an untimely demise.

This would be an extremely depressing way to end the beloved Walking Dead, but it's not impossible. What could cause Daryl and Carol to leave the group? Maybe just an innocent road trip to New Mexico, like the pair discussed in the season 10 premiere, but perhaps, it's something a bit more sinister. With a 24-episode final season, The Walking Dead certainly has ample time to tie up these loose ends.
