There’s something uniquely appealing about television romance. Given that the characters that often appear in television are a little closer to regular people than those that appear in movies, these types of romances seem more authentic and real, closer to everyday lived reality.
And, of course, it helps that many of them are also based on a partnership of opposites, suggesting that even the most opposite sorts of people can find happiness with one another. It has to be said, though, that even many of TV’s most iconic romances almost certainly wouldn’t have lasted in the real world.
10 Rachel And Ross Of Friends
In the annals of television, perhaps no relationship or romance has received as much attention as that between Ross and Rachel in Friends.
Their on-again/off-again romance has gone down in history as the stuff of legend, and there are still those who debate whether or not they were on a break. Of course, they did end up together, but it has to be admitted that they would almost certainly have ended up hating one another after a couple of years together.
9 Monica And Chandler Of Friends
The other big couple of the enormously popular Friends was, of course, Monica and Chandler, who embarked on a somewhat unusual romance and ended up getting married.
Obviously, a great deal of the chemistry there came about because of their opposite natures, and this is what would, in the real world, ultimately drive them apart. After all, there’s only so much difference that a given couple can endure before the cracks begin to show in the facade.
8 April And Andy Of Parks And Recreation
Parks and Recreation was one of those shows full of delightful and idiosyncratic people, and there were two in particular who were zany even by the show’s standards. They were, of course, Andy and April who, after a few fits and starts, managed to forge a relationship and eventually, a marriage.
Obviously, they were incredibly charming, but even though they both grew as characters, Andy remained something of a man child. It’s unlikely that April, the more mature of them, would have been willing to put up with his nonsense for their entire lives.
7 Fran Fine And Maxwell Sheffield Of The Nanny
From the moment that she entered Mr. Sheffield’s home, it was clear that there was something romantic between Fran and her boss. As the show developed, it became ever more obvious that they were going to get together, which they eventually did.
Though they are a very lovely couple, a realist would no doubt recognize that the enormous personality differences between them would ultimately doom their beautiful romance to failure.
6 Chidi And Eleanor Of The Good Place
The Good Place, like so many of the shows created by Michael Schur, is fundamentally optimistic, which is why it seemed from the beginning that Chidi and Eleanor, opposites in every way, would actually end up in a relationship.
Much as many viewers would no doubt like their partnership to last in the real world, it has to be said that their widely different temperaments - even after all of the ways that they grew and changed over the course of the show - would have doomed whatever chances they had.
5 Jake And Amy Of Brooklyn Nine-nine
Many are the sitcoms that have a pairing of opposites, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine fits into that mold with the characters of Amy and Jake. The two of them are opposites in almost every way, and yet somehow they make it work. This, despite the fact that they endured quite a few roadblocks on the path to their eventual nuptials.
It’s pretty clear to even the most romantic and optimistic observer that there’s almost no chance that even the strongest relationship could have weathered those challenges intact.
4 Marge And Homer Of The Simpsons
In some ways, the romance between Marge and Homer is one for the ages. Despite all of the many things that they have endured together, their love seems to spring eternal.
At the same time, there’s no doubt that Marge puts up with far more from Homer than literally anyone would in the real world. If this were the world that most people live in, she would have long ago left him, either to pursue her own career or to find a husband who didn’t go out of his way to prove his laziness and incompetence.
3 Jim And Pam Of The Office
The Office’s Jim and Pam are another of those couples that have gone in television history as something of an aspirational model of what a romantic pair should be like.
A closer look at what actually happened in their relationship, however, reveals that things weren’t quite as rosy as a lot of people remember, particularly since Pam was not nearly as supportive of Jim’s various professional aspirations as he was of hers. In real life, it would only have been a matter of time before his bitterness would get the better of their romance.
2 Lady Mary And Matthew From Downton Abbey
There were many reasons that Downton Abbey became an enormously popular show, but one of the most important and influential was the romance between Lady Mary and her distant cousin Matthew.
Despite the fact that they initially strongly disliked one another, they eventually embraced their feelings for one another. Of course, Matthew was killed in a car crash but, given how cold Mary could be, it’s unlikely that their relationship would have truly lasted in the real world.
1 Penny And Leonard From The Big Bang Theory
Most sitcoms, particularly in recent decades, have two characters that are seemingly fated to be in love. Leonard and Penny from The Big Bang Theory are one such couple, and there’s clearly a lot of chemistry between them.
However, given how radically different they are, and how different their priorities in life are, theirs is the kind of romance that would have been doomed to failure and mutual recrimination in the real world, where people far too often end relationships because of such differences.
