Brooklyn 99: Why Amy Double-Tucked Her Hair For Det. Majors In Season 2

Amy (Melissa Fumero) "double-tucked" her hair while on a date with Det. Majors (Garrett Dillahunt), despite not really liking him in Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 2. Each member of the 99 Precinct has their signature idiosyncrasies — this makes them an interesting bunch. Terry (Terry Crews) is obsessed with bodybuilding and yogurt; Rosa (Stephanie Beatriz) is known for being no-nonsense; Captain Holt (Andre Braugher) barely shows emotions; Charles (Joe Lo Truglio) tends to over-share and loves food; Hitchcock (Dirk Blocker) and Scully (Joel McKinnon Miller) always eat, and Jake (Andy Samberg) is essentially a child in a grown man's body. Amy, on the other hand, is over-competitive and a bad dancer — but one of her lesser-known quirks is that she tends to tuck her hair behind both ears when she's around someone she's secretly attracted to.

Jake and Amy have been together for so long now that anything before their relationship seems like from a different lifetime. The pair officially got together in season 3, got engaged in season 5, and tied the knot at the end of the same year. In the season 7 finale, they welcomed their son, Mac, after a tedious pregnancy journey. That said, there was a time in Brooklyn Nine-Nine that they weren't together. While it was clear from the beginning that they're made for each other, they still dated a couple of other people.

For Amy, that includes briefly going out with Detective Dave Majors, who was a guest star in Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 2. In the episode titled "Det. Dave Majors," the titular character who is dubbed as the best detective in the NYPD comes to the 99th Precinct to work a case with them. Jake was stoked with the idea until he learned that Majors was interested in Amy. Eventually, Amy agreed with Majors' invitation and they go out for drinks. At this point, Jake was feeling defeated, until fellow Nine-Nine detective Rosa told him about Amy's double-tuck, which she hadn't done when Majors was around. However, when Jake got to the bar, he saw Amy do just that while talking to Majors, discouraging him to pursue her.

The problem with this is, Amy didn't like Majors. When Jake asked Majors about his date with Amy, he said that she wasn't into him. Amy confirmed this to Jake later on when he asked her. She explained that after the complications from dating Teddy Wells Santos (Kyle Bornheimer), she decided not to date fellow cops anymore. This doesn't mean that Rosa's double-tuck indication isn't true, however, since Amy did that just as Jake walked away. So, why did she do the gesture during her date with Majors? The answer lies in what's actually happening around the time that Amy did her double-tuck. Looking closely at when she did the gesture, she was slightly leaning with her hair falling towards her face, so the instinct for her is to fix it. Unlike when she did it after her conversation with Jake later in the episode, this one happened out of necessity, and not an indication of her feelings for Majors. It just so happened that Jake got there at the wrong time and he got the wrong idea given what he saw.

Fortunately, it didn't take long for Amy and Jake to sort their feelings out for each other in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Almost immediately after the Majors snafu, they decided to try going out since it was obvious they were attracted to each other. Years later, they're still together.
