Everything We Know About Die Hard 6 (Is It Happening?)

It's been seven years since Bruce Willis last took down bad guys as John McClane, but is a Die Hard 6 happening? Yippee Ki Yay, Mr. Falcon. So goes the TV edited version of McClane's iconic catchphrase in Die Hard 2, much to the amusement of most fans. Sadly though, Die Hard's most recent outing didn't leave people with many reasons to laugh, or be thrilled for that matter. As telegraphed by the groan-worthy "Yippee Ki Yay, Mother Russia" tagline, 2013's fifth film ended up being the clear nadir of the legendary action franchise.

While Willis was still watchable enough as McClane, despite seeming a tad bored by the script, Jai Courtney was quite awful as John's son Jack, who gets a lot of focus in what seems like an attempt to phase John out of the leading role. Courtney earned many fans for his fun portrayal of Captain Boomerang in Suicide Squad, but his wooden performance does A Good Day to Die Hard no favors in the quality department.

It's safe to say that many fans of the franchise wish Die Hard 5 had never been made, making it logical that the thought of a Die Hard 6 might terrify them. Yet, there will always be those fans willing to hold out hope for a return to form, featuring Willis back on top as his greatest character. So, will there be a Die Hard 6? It's complicated.

In mid-October 2020, a short video appearing to tease Bruce Willis' impending return to the Die Hard franchise made fans sit up and take notice. Unfortunately, it was the lead-in to, of all things, a Die Hard-themed battery commercial. However, a Die Hard 6, called simply McClane, has been in the planning stages since 2017, said to focus on both young and present day John, and bring back his ex-wife Holly. That project was scrapped by Disney after they bought Fox in 2019, but most recently, in summer 2019, reports said that Disney was now developing McClane as a streaming series, presumably to run on Disney+ or Hulu. Things have been quiet since then.

With the status of Die Hard 6, or at least a McClane streaming series, currently in stasis, it seems unlikely another Die Hard project, whether it be for the big or small screen, will materialize before 2022. Action blockbusters take a long time to shoot, and even longer to complete post-production. The ongoing Coronavirus pandemic certainly isn't going to help things get moving anytime soon.

When last Die Hard 6, or McClane, was discussed publicly, the only confirmed cast member set to return was Bruce Willis as current John McClane. With Holly in the plans, one assumes Bonnie Bedelia would also come back to reprise her role, but that's unclear. Mary Elizabeth Winstead also expressed interest in returning as John and Holly's daughter Lucy.

As mentioned, Die Hard 6, dating back to its first reported title of Die Hard: Year One, is planned to feature both Willis as present day McClane and another actor as the heroic cop in his 20s. In that way, it would serve to compare and contrast the man John became to the man he started off as. Outside of that, nothing else about the plot is known, but one presumes lots of explosions will still be on the menu.
