How Lost Would Be Different If It Was Made In 2020 | Screen Rant

Lost showrunner Damon Lindelof says that if the show had been made in 2020, it would have been completely different, citing the pandemic and politics. The ABC show ran for six seasons from 2004 to 2010, and in the process became a bonafide pop culture phenomenon, with fans scouring each episode for clues to solving its many mysteries. Produced by J.J. Abrams, Lost captured the zeitgeist like few shows since, delighting and confounding audiences with its twist-filled plots, featuring flashbacks, flash forwards and a host of other narrative devices that hadn't been used to that degree in TV shows before.

Lindelof helped create the show and served as showrunner alongside Carlton Cuse. Despite wanting to end the show after season 3, Lindelof helped shepherd Lost all the way to its divisive finale. More recently, Lindelof served as the showrunner on the multiple Emmy Award-winning Watchmen for HBO, which featured just as many twists and turns, but was also far more political, taking a stance on a number of timely topics, from police brutality to race relations in America and the idea of celebrity culture.

During Saturday's New York Comic Con panel that celebrated Lost, Lindelof says that as a result of the current state of the world, the show would have been completely different if it was made in 2020. Lindelof cites the coronavirus pandemic and worldwide protests about police brutality among other issues as a reason, saying the show would have had to be more of a "soapbox," something that it wasn't when it was made 16 years ago. He adds that the idea of quarantine has changed so much that Desmond, the character stuck in the hatch for three years, would have had to change dramatically as an example. You can read his full comments below:

"Lost wouldn’t have been Lost if it had been made in 2020, certainly a lot of things about the show were very specifically speaking to the time that it was made in. If it were happening in 2020, I think that there are just so many distractions. We probably would’ve been more prone to be on the soap box and Lost wasn’t really a soap box show. Desmond would have had much stronger feelings about vaccinating himself down there in the hatch, and quarantine would’ve taken on an entirely different meaning. It was able to be what it was because of when it was on."

It's interesting to note that Lindelof, who used his Emmys appearance to make a statement about police brutality, believes the current political climate means that TV dramas are unable to ignore what's going on in the real world. As such, Lost would undoubtedly not have been the same show as it is if it was made today. The show was pure escapism, allowing audiences to escape into its mysteries and dramas, such as whether Kate would pick Sawyer or Jack.

While Lindelof feels that politics and real life commentary are unavoidable in the climate of 2020, there is still undoubtedly room for escapist entertainment. The enduring popularity of superhero movies are a prime example, with most featuring very little that reflects the real world. Still, though, given that Lost was run by Lindelof, there is no doubt he would have approached the material differently given the context of 2020.
