How To Pair Bluetooth Speakers & Phones To Amazon Echo Devices

An Amazon Echo device comes with many features, including the option to pair with a smartphone or Bluetooth speaker. Doing so takes only a few steps, as well as access to the Alexa app. From there, it’s simple to connect a smartphone or Bluetooth speaker to the Amazon Echo device. Once the devices have been paired, it’s possible for the Bluetooth device to automatically connect to the Echo when the two are within range of each other.

Amazon released the first Echo device in 2014. While traditional smart speakers with access to the Alexa voice assistant, Amazon's product line has since expanded to include smart displays for access to a clock face, video playback, and to make video calls. By saying one of several wake words or commands, an Echo device can provide information on the weather, search for recipes, or play music from various streaming services. Echo devices can also be connected to other smart home devices, including lights, thermostats, and video doorbells, including Amazon's own Ring products.

According to Amazon, in order to pair a phone or Bluetooth device with an Echo device, the user first needs to have access to the Amazon Alexa app that's available to download from the App Store and Google Play. After the app is installed and linked to an Amazon account, there are two ways to add a device. Either tap on the Device icon near the bottom-right corner or by tapping on the More icon. The next screen has the “Add a device” option right at the top. After tapping on the “Echo & Alexa” option, any already connected devices will be displayed. This list will also include any phones or Bluetooth speakers nearby that are available to connect with. Simply tap on the device name and then select “Bluetooth Devices” followed by “Pair A New Device.”

Some devices, like the Bose SoundLink speakers, just need to be switched on in order to be paired again with the Echo device. It’s also possible to pair a Bluetooth speaker to an Echo device directly from the Echo itself, if the user has an Echo with a screen. To do this, head to the Echo device's Settings, tap on Bluetooth, then on the name of the Bluetooth speaker or phone when it shows up on the screen. There is also the option to pair with an Echo spot from the phone and this can be done by visiting Settings, then tapping on Bluetooth, and then on the name of the additional Echo device to pair the two.

Once the Bluetooth speaker has been paired to the Amazon device, the Alexa-enabled Echo can then be instructed to play content, such as a Spotify playlist or an audiobook from Audible, and the audio will play from the Bluetooth speaker. This adds a degree of mobility to the Echo, which has to be plugged into an outlet to function. Smartphone users can also go to their personal music library, and tap on a song on their phone, or visit the YouTube app and start playing a video, and have the audio then play through the Echo device's speaker. While Amazon's Echo devices are great on their own, pairing a Bluetooth speaker or a smartphone gives them an extra boost and provides more options to the user.
