One talented fan has remade some of the character endings from Mortal Kombat 4 using Unreal Engine 4, and it has drawn the attention of none other than franchise co-creator Ed Boon himself. Epic Games' proprietary gaming engine continues to be a staple of professional video game development, with a new version ready for the next console generation, and its free-to-download nature has allowed fans with the required technical expertise to try their hand at recreating the magic of their favorite titles with an updated coat of paint.
These polished fan tributes have ranged from reimagining Super Mario Bros. as an FPS to full-blown modern remakes of classic games like Super Mario 64 and Star Wars: Dark Forces. Developers’ reactions to these types of projects have ranged from issuing cease-and-desist orders (as was the case when Take-Two Interactive discovered a fan-based remake of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas back in July) to joyfully promoting them on social media as a sign of appreciation.
YouTube animator Darko Subotin used Unreal Engine 4 to recreate one character's ending from Mortal Kombat 4, showing Chi confronting the evil sorcerer Shinnok and subduing him with an ancient amulet he secretly held on to years prior to the game's events. The result was so good that Mortal Kombat mastermind Ed Boon shared the fan-made recreation of Quan Chi’s Mortal Kombat 4 ending on Twitter. The entire scene retains the audio from the original, yet features updated visuals on par with last year's Mortal Kombat 11. Check it out in below:
Released back in 1997, Mortal Kombat 4 has been viewed as something of a black sheep in the long-running fighting franchise due to its rough-by-modern-standards graphics and less-than-stellar 3D movement, though it has seen a fair deal of exposure lately thanks to a re-release on GOG.com back in March. As for Ed Boon, he has been busy teasing new DLC characters for Mortal Kombat 11 on social media over the past few months, posting clues ranging from Queen songs to Marvel Cinematic Universe quotes in a bid to keep fans guessing about who’s coming to the game next.
In the meantime, Darko Subotin’s fan remake of Quan Chi’s Mortal Kombat 4 ending is visually impressive, even more so due to Ed Boon of all people sharing it on social media not too long after it was posted. The character models and animation are spot-on and could be easily mistaken for something crafted by NetherRealm itself. It's just another testament to the talent of video game fans and the power of Unreal Engine's graphical capabilities.
