PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds' upcoming Season 9 map, Paramo, will change its layout between every single match. This will be a new feature for the popular battle royale game and the announcement comes along with a teaser trailer that dropped earlier today.
With the rise of battle royale games both in popularity and in the sheer number available, developers have had to come up with new and exciting updates to their titles in order to keep their fanbases engaged. These updates usually come in the form of seasons and revolve around a specific aesthetic or gameplay mechanic that the developers use as the theme for duration of the season. A season usually lasts for only a few months before the next season is announced and the cycle begins all over again.
PUBG offered a tease of what players can expect for the upcoming Season 9. It will last only two months, but in that time, PUBG Corporation wants to redefine its game and the battle royale genre. There will be a special, active event mode throughout the season, but the centerpiece of PUBG's latest season is its newest map called Paramo, a plateau hidden among the clouds that players can only access by chopper. The main selling point of Paramo is that the small scale map will change its layout from match to match and it is hinted that this will be done via dynamic lava flows coming from the plateau's volcano.
Season 9 of PUBG will also offer two season passes for purchase. The first will be available with Update 9.1 and it will give players access to earn exclusive rewards, all seemingly based around a Paramo aesthetic. While this is similar to previous season passes, this particular pass will be modified to accommodate the shortened season. The second season pass will be available with Update 9.2 and it will be focused on an infamous PUBG character.
While the prospect of an ever-changing map should be exciting for PUBG players, particularly from a tactical perspective, there could be some concerns, mainly financial ones, over the two season passes. Over the years, game studios have tried many different tactics to make the most money out of a game. Some of the more infamous in recent years have been loot boxes or full price games that feel incomplete upon release, only to be completed with the purchase of DLC. With the rise of social media, players have been able to make known their displeasure with such practices more loudly than ever before. The announcement of two separate season passes could set off red flags for gamers who are concerned about price gouging.
While this does not seem to be on the same level as something like loot boxes, it could still make players uneasy that the battle royale games they have grown to love will fall victim to price walls. Only time will tell if this will become an issue in PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, for now, it at least seems to be offering lots of content for everyone, whether they buy a season pass or not.
PUBG Season 9 drops October 21 on PC and October 29 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
