Star Wars has introduced fans to a whole range of characters, but Rogue One brought in one of the most complex to universe. Jyn Erso was the lead of this war film and has also been the subject of a couple of different books, which managed to explore her further.
However, there's a number of inconsistencies with the character. Despite the fantastic writing and the great portrayal of the character from Felicity Jones, there's a few details that don't quite add up properly, or don't necessarily fit with what has been seen from the character in the past; especially relating to her feelings on revolutions.
10 Getting Left Behind
One thing that doesn't make much sense for Jyn's backstory is the fact that her mentor and foster father, Saw Gerrera, left her behind. Supposedly for her own protection so he could fight in war, it didn't make much sense for her story.
She spent a lot of time training under Saw and learning a great number of skills. It's odd therefore that he would just up and leave without any more of a word to her. It's no wonder she has come to not trust the man.
9 Her Relationship With Saw Gerrera
Since she has had a strange upbringing under Saw, her relationship with him also doesn't make much sense. They were very close, then he abandoned her and finally she came to trust him once more, despite how he felt about her.
Almost to his dying breath he seemed to be paranoid of Jyn. Their relationship was complex and really didn't make much sense. It was if neither of them knew what to actually think of the other, since so much had happened.
8 Her Unwillingness To Get Involved
Jyn spent so much of her life preparing for a revolution that she became jaded in taking part in. For much of her adult life she actually tried to stay outside of conflicts, despite everything she had been taught and everything that her spirit wanted her to be.
While it's not a continuity error, it does seem quite odd that she then becomes some great leader of a revolution and the figurehead of the galaxy, leaving a long legacy. Her feelings on whether to be involved in the conflicts must be very complicated.
7 Her Nickname
Her nickname throughout the film is Stardust. The books also see her father use this nickname for her, but there's very little explanation on why that's the name that was settled on. The fact is, it's likely just a detail to link up to the Death Star plans later.
Many other elements from the costumes, to the kyber crystal necklace are clearly thought out deeply, but for some reason the Stardust name feels much more like a convenient choice in order for the narrative to move forward.
6 Her Desire To Be A Martyr
Towards the end of her life Jyn went on what was essentially a suicide mission. She was fully aware of this and was happy to become a martyr for the good of the future Republic. This conflicts with what she wanted for her life though.
She seemed to want her life to be more than about rebellion and that she was designed for something more. For her to die in the act also seems as if she couldn't see a future for herself, which was clearly not true considering the friends and life she had started to build.
5 Her Trust Of Cassian
Cassian Andor is certainly someone who shouldn't be trusted. He works alongside a re-programmed Empire droid and was willing to try and kill Jyn's father, without telling her what he was going to do. It's strange she trusts him at all.
He has been known to make the tough choices, the kind that could put her in danger. While he redeems himself somewhat, Jyn has proven to be someone who holds onto certain beliefs. It's strange that she comes to trust him so much in the end, especially on Scariff.
4 Her Relationship With Bodhi
Bodhi is another character that Jyn should be perhaps more sceptical of. She has been trained not to trust the Empire in any capacity and yet she takes the word of a pilot that has supposedly defected. Her thoughts of the Empire even clouds her view of her father.
Considering how closely she comes to work with Bodhi, there doesn't seem to be a lot of continuity between how she views the Empire now. She's sometimes shown to have the same paranoia as Saw, but this never reflects on how she then treats people.
3 Her Potential Survival
There were rumors and plans for Disney+ to have some kind of Jyn Erso TV show set after the events of Rogue One. Considering how popular the film was, it makes sense and has now led to a Cassian Andor show instead.
However, what didn't make sense is how Jyn could have survived the events of the battle on Scariff. There was clearly some kind of creative plan in place, but their deaths seemed like they were pretty much guaranteed.
2 Jyn's Memories Of Her Past
Jyn's memories of her past life with her mother and father are quite sketchy, considering how young she was. She doesn't seem to totally remember her time with the father, working under the Empire.
This should have had a larger impact on her and considering she remembers other elements of this time period, it's odd she shut out the time where they were with the Empire and acts as if her father is innocent.
1 Her Desire To Join The Rebellion
She was trained to be something she didn't want to be, didn't trust the people around her and tried to stay outside of the conflict. Then all of sudden she joins the Rebels, a group that she had also been taught not to trust.
Jyn's methods seems to be to work solo, so it seems odd that she joins forces with a group she had very mixed feelings about. Much like many other aspects of her character, her choice here just didn't make much sense; with a lot of contradictions.
