There’s no doubt that Aang from Avatar: The Last Airbender is the hero of the story. As the main protagonist, the series centers around his narrative arc from the boy lost in the iceberg to a fully-fledged Avatar who restores balance to the world.
Aang is an overall good and caring person, and he has many strengths as a character in both skill and personality. However, he is also very young, and he has weaknesses that often trip him up throughout the series.
10 Weakness: Not taking things seriously enough
Given that Aang is only 12 when the series starts, it’s not that surprising that Aang doesn’t always take things very seriously. He’s barely more than a kid, and while he was raised to be wise and mature for his age, this doesn’t mean he’s got it all figured out.
He has a tendency to want to play and not take things too seriously especially when he first emerges from the ice.
9 Strength: His conviction to his principles
Aang might be barely a pre-teen, but he was raised by people who taught him strong principles and ethics. He learned to value all life and was taught that taking a life is a serious thing to do.
While it could be frustrating to see him refuse to consider taking Ozai’s life, in the end, he did things his own way by staying true to himself. His convictions were definitely one of his greatest strengths.
8 Weakness: Being avoidant
There are many times throughout the show where Aang avoids doing something because he’s scared or unsure. He puts off learning to fire bend because he’s scared of hurting people, and he wastes time preparing for his face-off with Ozai.
This seems largely because of his age, but it was a weakness that got Aang into trouble sometimes. By avoiding difficult things, he wasn't always as prepared as he could have been for the things he needed to do.
7 Strength: His anger at inequality
One of the most endearing things about Aang is how much he cares about other people. While he’s generally a pretty gentle person overall, he could get angry and upset when he saw injustice and pain in the world.
Aang had a soft heart that didn’t want to see others suffer, and his ability to be motivated by helping others was one of the best things about him. While anger isn’t always a good thing, it can be a good tool when used sparingly.
6 Weakness: Being too sensitive at times
For many fictional characters, as well as real people, their greatest strengths and their biggest weaknesses are often similar. For Aang, his compassion and gentleness was often a strength, but it could become a weakness when he was overly sensitive. He wasn’t good at taking criticism, and he needed a lot of positive reinforcement.
This is why he struggled at first with Toph as his teacher because Toph was a lot more direct.
5 Strength: Seeing the value in all living things
Aang followed his principles in many ways as he was a vegetarian who was gentle to animals and all living creatures.
This was one of the most lovely and positive things about him, and he was continually being taught how all people and beings in the world were connected. Aang definitely saw the value in each individual, and he even realized he couldn’t treat everyone in the Fire Nation as an enemy.
4 Weakness: His immaturity
One of Aang’s overall biggest weaknesses was his immaturity. It’s hard to completely blame him for this because he was so young during the events of the series, but it could still get frustrating at times. Aang likely grew out of this, but he did mess around too often.
While being playful and wanting to have fun is a good thing, Aang could take this too far when he avoided his other responsibilities or was too careless.
3 Strength: His inherent bending skill
While most of the points on this list have to do with things about Aang’s personality and character, it’s worth noting that he was extremely skilled as a bender, too.
This isn’t all that surprising given that he was an Avatar, but the fact that he mastered all four elements at such a young age was definitely impressive.
2 Weakness: His inability to let go
When Aang is being taught by Guru Pathik, he learns that he needs to be able to let go of his earthly attachments in order to unlock his crown chakra and control the Avatar State.
Aang is scared to let go of Katara, and he ends up impeding his connection to the Avatar state because of this mistake. While he definitely didn’t mean any harm, he did have a hard time finding balance in this area.
1 Strength: His ability to love strongly
While Aang’s inability to let go could sometimes be to his and others’ determinant, his ability to love and care deeply was also a strength.
Aang was driven in many ways by his compassion for all living things as well as his love and connection to individual people. While he didn’t always strike the perfect balance with this, he was very young, and it was definitely a strength he could hone over time.
