The Office: 10 Best Outfits To Make Into Your Next Halloween Costume

Halloween is a sacred tradition across all of TV land, especially sitcoms. And while many a show has delivered the memorable spooktacular episode, none has handled it with quite such dedication as The Office. In fact, The Office’s dedication to putting on weird get-ups to spend the day in is so great that some of the best costume ideas aren’t even from Halloween episodes! Which, really, should come as no surprise to anyone who has spent time watching the antics of Michael Scott and co.

If anything, one should wonder if Halloween might be the one time a year where the staff of Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is actually less weird than usual…

10 Prison Mike

Michael Scott is a man of many talents… and many more characters. When challenged with the nigh-impossible task of proving that daily working life is not as bad as time in prison, Michael breaks out his tough-as-nails, street-hardened persona: Prison Mike!

No less offensive than any of Michael’s other SNL-esque characters, Prison Mike is not only fondly remembered for his sense of fashion (respect for the bandana-kerchief) but also his magical back story… as an inmate in the infamous prison of Azkaban, straight out of the world of Harry Potter.

9 Vampire Jim

Remember when Jim was a fun character whose time on screen was relished? While Jim’s meticulously planned pranks are always a pleasure to witness (at the cost of Dwight’s peace of mind, of course), his spur-of-the-moment antics are often equally delightful and a marvel of wit and spontaneity. So when a stray, panicked (and rabid) bat is let loose in the office, Jim takes the opportunity to lead Dwight into believing that he may be a deathless child of the night.

And for an extra dose of vampiric authenticity, the episode in question (Business School) was directed by Joss Whedon of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame.

8 Facebook Jim

Jim’s clearly a man of great range. Be it a full cosplay of Dwight that would be applauded by your comic-con regular, to an embarrassingly easy yet abstract office staple, the three-hole punch.

Yet, his true brilliance lies in the still-topical Facebook riff he had on in the season 6 episode Koi Pond. More interestingly, however, Jim’s tenure as Facebook is one for the truest of fans as the scene has been removed from subsequent editions of the episode due to Michael simulating suicide by hanging.

7 Hannibal Dwight

Arguably one of the most hilarious pair of episodes, season 5’s Stress Relief offers a plethora of iconic moments that pretty much embody The Office—from Dwight starting a fire to teach his colleagues a lesson on the importance of emergency preparedness, to a roast of Michael Scott.

But a truly standout moment is Dwight’s stab at channeling the spirit of Hannibal Lecter in Homage to the infamous scene from The Silence of the Lambs. Throw in his uncanny “Clariiiice” and you have a costume that may be more than even Halloween could handle.

6 The Scranton Strangler

An icon within an iconic series, the Scranton Strangler was more than just an offscreen gag. Titillating fans and characters alike, speculation of the man behind the mystery has outlived even the show.

While Toby may have gotten closer to the case than anybody else, it is Dwight’s costume on a Halloween in Season 7 that gives the audience their first look at the serial killer. And while dressing up as the Scranton Strangler would require the right wardrobe and some effort, at least this iteration of the character allow you to be both the legendary serial killer, and the even more legendary Dwight Schrute.

5 Belsnickel Dwight

Trust Dwight to put a spin on Christmas that would make the Grinch look like an elf in Santa’s workshop. While most, if not all, of Dwight’s seemingly odd beliefs, have some root in the real world, the Belsnickel is a pretty classic dose of a Dwight Christmas.

While the exact costume may not be a particularly easy one to replicate, the wide interpretations of the Belsnickel offer relative flexibility as long as you have a sack that looks like you may be carrying a child in it.

4 Charlie Chaplin Pam

Although every bit as witty and delightful as Jim (arguably more so at times), Pam’s often touted to be the quiet and reserved one in the office. Of course, with the likes of Dwight, Michael, Meredith, and Creed in the same four walls as herself, being the “quiet and reserved one” may just be a smart survival skill.

But her characteristic quietness takes an almost literal manifestation as Charlie Chaplin! Ironically, in dressing up for Halloween at her temp job in Dunder Mifflin New York, she inadvertently becomes the loudest person walking around…

3 The Dark Knight Joker Creed

Argue all you want about who’s the best on-screen Joker, the fact remains that no one quite blurs the line between the man and clown prince of crime quite like Creed.

Despite having been only one of the three people to dress up as Heath Ledger’s take on the Joker from The Dark Knight, Creed’s natural personality and sincerely off-the-hinges delivery of, well, any line he speaks, bumps his impression of the character more than a few notches over his colleagues’. Interestingly, between Creed, Kevin, and Dwight, it seems like The Office may have pulled off the Three Jokers story well before DC…

2 Sexy Toby Nellie

For all the idiosyncrasies of the characters found in The Office, Toby’s only real sin seems to be being actually normal, in early seasons... At least in what passes for normal in a workplace run by the likes of Michael Scott. And while he’s had his fair share of eyebrow-raising moments (anything with Pam, really), Toby was, sadly, generally under-appreciated, until he was characterized as a creep.

Thank the makers for Nellie, then. While she may have never really taken to Toby quite as much he would have liked, her sexy take on Mr. Flenderson certainly made an impression on the audience… and a greater impression on Toby himself.

1 Lady Gaga Gabe

We’ll be honest, Gabe never really left much of an impression on the audience during his run on the show. While the character certainly had some potential as Toby 2.0, his introduction and subsequent development were often mired by a very confused era of the show, one trying to find its footing in Michael Scott’s last days and eventual departure.

But to give where due, Gabe’s daring—and committed—Lady Gaga costume certainly earned him some cred with fans. Those final seasons may have been somewhat of a bad romance, but Gabe’s poker face was a winner this one time.
