The revelation regarding the Sparrow Academy's existence was a major surprise in The Umbrella Academy season 2 finale, but many fans wanted answers regarding the green cube levitating next to the new group. The hit series follows a team of superpowered siblings and is based on the comic book series of the same name by Gerard Way, which may provide insight into the Sparrow Academy, and more importantly, the significance of the cube.
Following the time spent trapped in 1960s Dallas, the Hargreeves siblings - Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, Five, and Vanya - managed to return to 2019. But what they returned to was an altered 2019 in which their adoptive father, Sir Reginald Hargreeves, was still alive. Rather than form the Umbrella Academy, he went in a different direction after encountering the group during their time travel stint. Reginald decided to form another team of superpowered children, and this time, he made the Sparrow Academy. Even more interesting was that Ben, the deceased Umbrella Academy sibling, was alive, serving as the presumed leader of the team.
In the final sequence presented in The Umbrella Academy season 2 finale, the Hargreeves siblings encountered Reginald and the Sparrow Academy. Aside from Ben, there were five undisclosed members, as well as the levitating green cube. The cube is new to the series, but it was present in Way's recent comic book series, The Umbrella Academy: Hotel Oblivion. Although its purpose wasn't revealed as of yet, the cube was heavily connected to the Sparrow Academy in the comic book storyline. According to popular theories (via Reddit), there's a belief that the cube is containing one of the 43 children specifically chosen for the Sparrow Academy. Whether it's a soul or some type of manifestation, the fact that it stood next to fellow team members insinuates that the cube is another child. Series creator Steve Blackman added to the speculation by revealing the cube's name is Christopher (via Reddit AMA), but that doesn't rule out other theories.
While some have claimed that the green cube could be Harlan Cooper based on the fact that it's levitating or even someone with time travel powers like Number Five, it seems as though the cube will be connected to a brand new character. The linked theories also suggest that the cube could be an AI, taking the caregiver role of Grace or Pogo. Both figures were imperative in the Hargreeves' siblings upbringing since Reginald wasn't very father-like. Even though Reginald may have raised the Sparrow Academy differently, he probably would have needed help. In a series that featured a member of the Commission's Board of Directors with a fish tank for a head, a green cube isn't out of the realm of possibility.
Whatever the floating green cube might be, its presence will clearly be a hot topic in The Umbrella Academy season 3 and beyond. The Hargreeves siblings will seemingly be at odds with the Sparrow Academy. By presenting the new group, each member of this team will get time in the spotlight. Hopefully, the live-action series can provide more of an explanation for the green cube compared to the mystery lingering in Way's comics.
