For as long as we can remember, Hollywood has always had an obsession with vampires. For instance, there are at least 10 vampire-related shows on Netflix that you can sink your teeth into even when it’s not Halloween. In addition, there’s also a good mix of vampire films that are both overrated and underrated.
At the center of all this vampire talk are two female vampires. These are Elena Gilbert from The Vampire Diaries and Bella Swan from the Twilight franchise. Fans still fight over which vampire is better, so let's settle it!
10 Elena Has A Better Fashion Sense
Generally, people have always been mesmerized by Elena, so much so that we choose to ignore the things that are wrong with her. That said, her fashion style is certainly not one of them. Unbeknownst to many, Elena’s wardrobe is the result of a careful curation done by the show’s costume designer, Jennifer Bryan.
While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Bryan admitted that when Elena started wearing the necklace, things became more challenging. “I made sure I locked down her look with scoops, V-necks,” she explained.
9 Bella Managed To Grow A Baby Vampire In Her Belly
Admittedly, one of the things that make no sense about Bella Swan is the fact that she managed to grow a baby in her belly who wasn’t fully human. Bella learned of her pregnancy following her decision to spend her honeymoon as a human. This led to complications, which also served as a major plotline in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1.
As the pregnancy progressed, Bella also looked visibly paler and weaker. Director Bill Condon told the Los Angeles Times that this was achieved through special effects, instead of having actress Kristen Stewart undergo a drastic diet.
8 Elena Knows How To Fight
In the series, Elena is not just a pretty face. She can kick some serious butt too. It’s also led fans to wonder if Elena is a more superior vampire to her television counterpart and vampire slayer, Buffy Summers. Throughout the show’s seasons, Elena has been in various fight scenes.
And in retrospect, such scenes may have been easy to work on for Nina Dobrev, who portrays the character. While speaking with W Magazine, she revealed that she’s into combat workouts. She also takes fitness very seriously so she’s probably ready to do a fight sequence anytime.
7 Bella Can Be Stronger Than Other Vampires
One thing that was noticeable about Bella once she became a vampire was her physical prowess. In fact, she even managed to beat Emmett Cullen in an arm-wrestling match. As Twilight fans know, Emmett is supposed to be the strongest vampire of all the Cullens.
That said, Bella’s extraordinary strength was due to being a newborn. This means there’s a chance that she will likely experience a decrease in physical abilities over time. That shouldn’t be a problem though. The coven protects each other after all!
6 Elena Is Easier To Get To Know (Not Broody)
In The Vampire Diaries, Elena starts out as a typical high school girl who attends Mystic Falls. Her good friends include Caroline and Bonnie. Elena also happened to be an honor student and cheerleader, making her one of the most popular girls in school.
That said, Elena wasn’t exactly a cheerful girl when she was first introduced to fans. After all, she had just lost her parents in a car accident and she was still trying to cope with the loss. Still, she's a lot more open and extroverted than Bella.
5 Bella Has Shielding Abilities
One of the most popular questions about Bella Swan involves the powers that she developed when she became a vampire. In The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, it is revealed that Bella gained some shielding abilities. Specifically, she can protect other vampires from any psychic attacks.
At the same time, Bella is immune to any mental attacks launched by other vampires. That means they can’t read her mind and they certainly can’t put her in a hypnotic state. With this ability, Bella has become a true asset to the Cullens.
4 Elena Is Always There For Her Friends
Sure, both vampires have a set of close friends, but we’d argue that Elena makes for a better BFF than Bella. In fact, we can easily name five instances when Elena had been a good friend in the series. For starters, she happily kept Bonnie’s secret upon learning that she is a witch.
Meanwhile, when she was preparing to sacrifice herself during the season six finale, Elena was clearly still thinking about her friends. In fact, she even asked Bonnie and Caroline to keep diaries so that she can read all about their lives when she wakes up.
3 Bella Will Do Anything To Protect Her Father
In the story, police chief Charlie Swan is a dad trying his best to raise his daughter Bella all on his own. However, the situation immediately gets complicated when Bella decides to date a vampire. To protect her father, Bella also decides not to share her decision to become one herself.
To her credit, that may have been the right thing to do since Charlie didn’t even know that vampires and wolves existed all around him. In fact, he was completely clueless until Jacob decided to show himself in wolf form.
2 Elena Values Family
After the death of her parents, Elena tries her best to care for your brother Jeremy. But the situation around them becomes more challenging after Jeremy starts getting involved in drugs. It also doesn’t’ help that he was traumatized by the events that transpired after former flame Vicki turned into a vampire in season one.
Elena then asked Damon to erase Jeremy’s memory of Stefan killing Vicki. While speaking with the Los Angeles Times, Dobrev explained that Elena had that done because her character “was looking to protect him.”
1 Bella Is A Devoted Lover
Sure, Bella may have been torn between a werewolf and a vampire initially. But eventually, she discovers that her feelings for Jacob (played by Taylor Lautner) were not romantic. This was made clear when she decides to marry Edward and even transform into a vampire.
Following the events of the final film, we’re also quite certain that Bella and Edward will enjoy their lives together for all eternity. It’s also safe to say that there will be no more love triangles for these two moving forward.
