CD Projekt has confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 will support cross-saving and backward compatibility on next-gen consoles. The game is set to release on both current and next-gen consoles on December 10th, following multiple delays. Given how notoriously difficult it is to buy a next-gen console, the prospect of getting it on current-gen is likely an appealing one.
For a long time now, Cyberpunk 2077 has been about as hotly anticipated as the new generation of video game consoles itself. CD Projekt has promised a game that is truly massive in scope, packed with details, characters, and side content to explore. Unfortunately, eight years after the game was announced, fans are still waiting. The game has been delayed over and over again; the most recent delay pushed the game back to December, and was such a surprise for the gaming community as a whole that even the developers working on the title weren't informed until the general public was at the same time.
But eventually Cyberpunk 2077 is going to come out, and today the team behind the game revealed some exciting logistical details on Twitter. Fans who buy the game on PS4 or Xbox One can transfer their save data to the corresponding next-gen console. For the Xbox family this can be done through the company's Smart Delivery system. PlayStation owners can either save their data to the cloud through PS Plus, transfer their data through an internet connection, or use an external storage device. They can then keep playing the game without any loss of progress whatsoever, and enjoy at least some of the benefits that the next-gen console will bring.
At the rate that both next-gen consoles and Cyberpunk 2077 are going, it seems likely that in the immediate future most fans will only have one or the other, not both. There have even been rumors that Cyberpunk 2077 will be delayed one more time before release, though this seems unlikely. Players who aren't lucky enough to retrieve a next-gen console before Cyberpunk 2077 releases (whenever that is) will surely appreciate the ability to pick it back up when they finally do get a PS5 or a Series X/S.
Cyberpunk 2077 is such a prominent game that the whole industry has reshaped itself around it. Games like Path of Exile have even pushed back major content releases to accommodate the most recent delay. The amount of hype and anticipation that has been generated for this title is astronomical. Only time will tell if Cyberpunk 2077 will be worth the wait, and if it's worth making the generational leap with.
