The hit Showtime crime drama Dexter based on the series of books on the vigilante serial killer who channeled his Dark Passenger to rid the world of other heinous murderers became a rage among critics and the masses alike.
Yet, although Dexter has a devoted fan-following, there are those who boldly express their opinions that run contrary to the popular opinions about the show. Here are the unpopular opinions on Dexter that Redditors
10 The 4th Season Was The Worst
Season 4 of Dexter saw the vigilante serial killer lock horns with another, more experienced, and extremely dangerous killer known as the Trinity killer who killed in patterns of three.
The season also ended in a horrific tragedy, often considered one of the most shocking season finales on popular television. But tragic though the ending was, the season is considered to be one of the best in the entire series, leaving a lasting impression on fans. But one very unpopular opinion suggests that this season was the most disappointing of the lot, and the Trinity storyline often hailed as one of the best, was really the worst.
9 Decline In Quality Of Writing
Yet another unpopular opinion on Reddit is that the show had already lost its way by the time season 7 happened. In season 7, Dexter met Hannah and had to deal with Debra finding out about his parallel life as a serial killer. Moreover, the season ended with Debra Morgan shooting Maria Laguerta in cold blood.
Not only did the writing deteriorate but the character of the central protagonist became erratic. From letting Hannah go even after she had tried to poison Debra to killing off innocent people randomly, the series became inconsistent as a whole.
8 Astor's Acting Became Cringey
Dexter was fond of his step-kids, Astor and Cody, in his own twisted, complicated way. The older kid, Astor, became a troubled teenager after her mother's horrifying death, although neither she nor Cody stayed a permanent part of Dexter's life since Rita was killed off.
A few fans found Astor's behavior cringeworthy. She was shown acting out with Dexter whom she held responsible in some way for her mother's death and even began indulging in self-destructive behavior. But some fans felt she simply became annoying and the level of acting was substandard.
7 The Whole Bennet Clan Was Annoying
Rita was mostly adored by everyone who loved Dexter and Dexter was fond of his step-kids, Astor and Cody, in his own twisted, complicated way.
But in a very unpopular opinion, this fan found the entire Bennet clan, Rita as well as her two children, annoying and pretty much unlikable. Astor's behavior was considered cringeworthy and her brother Cody, this fan unabashedly states, shouldn't have existed as a character. Since Rita was pretty much one of the most endearing characters in the show, this is definitely unpopular as far as opinions go.
6 Showing Hannah Some Love
Yvonne Strahovski joined the series as Hannah McKay from its seventh season onwards. Hannah was herself a serial killer and became romantically involved with Dexter after the latter tried to kill her first.
Fans in general never felt connected to Hannah's character, who had a strangely sensuous relationship with Dexter who found himself drawn to her irrevocably. But it seems not everyone hated Hannah and even considered her his best love interest. Hannah, according to these Redditors, was the one who made sense the most with Dexter.
5 Maria Laguerta Was A Fascinating Villain
Maria Laguerta was yet another polarizing character on the show; she was a layered personality, a ruthless politician who would behave atrociously at times for purely selfish reasons.
But although Laguerta took a lot of flak from fans, there are some who think that she was a strong, empowered character who faced challenges and pushed through in her career no matter what. She was also a loyal friend and at the end of the day, she was a good person with the law on her side, thus not really justifying the hate directed towards her.
4 The Harry Hate Club
Dexter's adoptive dad, Harry Morgan, was someone he looked up to for a major part of his life. In fact, Dexter spent a good many years trying to live by Harry's code, making sure he never killed an innocent and that he never got caught.
It was Harry who, in an attempt to protect his adoptive son, effectively created the monster that was Dexter and his importance in Dexter's life was iron-clad. However, some Redditors feel that Harry behaved questionably when he left young Brian, Dexter's older brother, in the bloodbath after their mother had been killed. He also never informed Dexter about his brother or mother, making him a controversial character at best. He was also abusive to Debra, growing up, and generally a narcissist who didn't treat anyone quite right.
3 Debra Morgan Didn't Impress
Debra Morgan was Dexter's younger adoptive sister and a beloved character on the show. Debra acted as Dexter's conscience and one of the things in his life that helped maintain his facade of normalcy.
But there seems to be a minor section of fans who hated Debra with a passion. Not only did they find her constant swearing and nagging uncomfortable, they also weren't particularly impressed by the actress, Jennifer Carpenter, who played the role.
2 The Series Finale Worked
Dexter had a very polarizing series finale with many fans expressing disappointment and outrage at the way the final season ended, with the serial killer entering a self-imposed exile to keep his son safe.
Once again, contrary to popular public opinion, a few fans found the finale fitting. They appreciated that Dexter needed to distance himself from his son and Hannah for their sake and also that this was the most important moment in his character's evolutionary arc, his final act of selflessness.
1 Dexter Would Have Been Better Off Alone
Dexter had a series of romantic interests on the show. Even while Rita was alive, he was shown to be sexually involved with the deranged Lila West. And after Rita's death, he developed feelings for both Lumen and Hannah.
His relationships were something that kept him in touch with reality, but some fans feel he would have been better off alone. Not only did he put others around him in danger, destroying everyone he loved, but also because he would have had less baggage to deal with, thus making him better at what he did.
