Dragon Quest XI S Definitive Edition Gets 10-Hour Demo On PC & PS4

A lengthy free demo has been released for Dragon Quest XI S: Definitive Edition, and is available now for download on PC and PS4. The definitive edition of the renowned JRPG released last year on Nintendo Switch, and will be joining the libraries of PS4, Xbox One, and PC on December 4th.

Dragon Quest XI S made waves when it released for Switch last year; it was a considerable success with critics, including Screen Rant's own. Critics lauded the game's story, its setting, and its characters. Some reviewers, however, felt that the game hewed too close to JRPG traditions, and that it didn't feature enough new content to stand out from the rest of the genre and compete with exemplary games like Persona 5. Critics also complained about the game's midi soundtrack, which they felt didn't match the game's sweeping environment and visuals. Fortunately, a fully orchestrated version was introduced in the definitive edition.

After its success on Switch, Square Enix is bringing the JRPG to other consoles, making it the first Dragon Quest game to appear on an Xbox system. In advance of its December 4th release, the game is getting a very lengthy demo. As revealed on the PlayStation Blog, the demo will give players a very substantial chunk of gameplay to work through, sending them through the lengthy first chapter of Dragon Quest XI. Square Enix promises about ten hours' worth of content in all, and all progress made in the demo will carry over to the main game when it releases next month.

Like many JRPGs, Dragon Quest XI is a very lengthy game. There's a lot of content for new players to unpack, and with that in mind, a demo is a very prudent thing. The opening ten hours will give beginners plenty of time to get used to the expansive setting of Erdrea and familiarize themselves with the turn-based combat and the epic storyline of the game. Like all game demos, it's also a solid marketing move; by the time fans finish the demo, they should know beyond any doubt whether or not they want to invest money and time in the massive full game.

The release of Dragon Quest XI S is big news for JRPG fans, and longtime devotees of the Dragon Quest series are certain to be excited about it. But thanks to this demo, it's easier than ever for newcomers to get involved in this deep and lengthy title. The demo for Dragon Quest XI S: Definitive Edition is available now on PS4 and PC, and JRPG fans should definitely give it a look.
