For many viewers, Daenerys' demise was a divisive ending for the character. The Khaleesi survives hardships, struggles, and insurmountable odds throughout her arc in the series; though, to be fair to the Mother of Dragons, she did have some help.

10 Should Have Died: Robert's Assassin Tries To Poison The Khaleesi

Daenerys almost meets an abrupt end in season 1, following her marriage to Khal Drogo. The Targaryen-hating King Robert Baratheon sends an assassin to kill the Khaleesi after discovering she is pregnant, fearing a future war with the Dragonlords and the Dothraki.

Whilst browsing through the markets at Vaes Dothraki, Daenerys meets a wine merchant who recognizes her as a Targaryen princess. The would-be assassin almost succeeds in killing the Khaleesi by gifting her a cask of poisoned wine.

9 Why She Survived: Ser Jorah Saves The Day

Jorah Mormont's initial treachery endangers Dany's life, though his later loyalty saves her from the assassination attempt in season1. The knight passes information about Daenerys to Varys; when the wine merchant makes his gift, Jorah is quick to suss out the truth.

Jorah demands that the merchant taste the wine first, prompting the assassin to flee. Dany's bloodriders apprehend him before he can escape, leading to his death at Khal Drogo's command.

8 Should Have Died: Wandering Through The Red Waste

The birth of the dragons was a momentous occasion, yet Dany finds herself in a perilous situation straight afterward. Widowed and weakened, Daenerys is forced to wander through the Red Waste with her small khalasar, seeking sanctuary from the many threats who hunt them.

Most of Drogo's bloodriders oppose Dany after the Khal's fall from power. To protect her dragons and her people, the Dragon Queen defies odds to survive in the desert.

7 Why She Lived: Given Sanctuary In Qarth

Luckily for the Mother of Dragons, she is saved from the Red Waste by Xaro Xhoan Daxos in season 2's "Garden Of Bones." The Thirteen meet with Daenerys outside the gates of Qarth. The Khaleesi is initially denied entry to the city before Xaro vouches for her safety.

Xaro proves to be untrustworthy, though his help is instrumental in the young queen's journey. Without Qarth's sanctuary, Daenerys and her dragons would have perished in the perilous Red Waste.

6 Should Have Died: The Warlocks' Assassination Attempt

In season 3, Daenerys Targaryen has another near-brush with death in the city of Astapor. Seething from the events of season 2, the warlocks of Qarth attempt to kill the Dragon Queen with a magical assassin and a deadly manticore.

In the books, the warlocks despise Daenerys for the destruction of the House of the Undying. Thankfully, the mystical magicians leave Dany alone for the rest of the television series.

5 Why She Survived: Ser Barristan Selmy Swears Loyalty To A New Queen

Before season 3, viewers last see Ser Barristan the Bold when the esteemed knight is released from his Kingsguard vows by Joffrey and Cersei. Appalled by the Lannisters, Barristan escapes from King's Landing and travels to Essos to meet Daenerys.

Barristan's arrival couldn't have been better timed. When the manticore advances on Daenerys, the knight is there to slay the creature and save his new queen.

4 Should Have Died: The Sons Of The Harpy Strike Again

The silver queen makes many enemies during her time in Meereen. Notably, the Sons of the Harpy rise against Daenerys and the Unsullied in season 5, rebelling against the Targaryen queen's abolition of slavery and her reign over the city.

Daenerys nearly meets a shocking demise when the Sons of the Harpy attack during the games in Daznak's Pit. The Unsullied struggle against the surprise attack and Daenerys soon finds herself surrounded.

3 Why She Survived: Drogon Returns

Luckily for the Mother of Dragons, her fiercest child returns in time to save her from the Sons of the Harpy. The dragon's shocking reappearance is a definitive moment that leads to Daenerys's flight from Meereen as she takes to the skies atop Drogon.

The bond between Daenerys and her dragon deepens during their reconciliation. Drogon senses the Targaryen queen's imminent doom and arrives in the nick of time for a grand, fiery entrance.

2 Should Have Died: Wights Attack Daenerys & Drogon During The Long Night

When the Night's King undead army descends on the living during season 8's "The Long Night," even the skies prove to be unsafe. A distracted Daenerys finds herself in danger when wights climb atop Drogon. The queen falls from her mount as the zombie-covered dragon flies away.

Without Drogon, Daenerys is at her most vulnerable. The Khaleesi stares death in the face once more when the Night King's reanimated soldiers surround her on the battlefield.

1 Why She Survived: Saved By Ser Jorah Again

In another heartbreaking moment for fans of Game Of Thrones, Ser Jorah Mormont gives his life to guard Daenerys against wights during the Battle of Winterfell.  Dany lands in peril when she falls from her dragon and would have died if the loyal knight hadn't found her.

Jorah and Dany fight beside each other against the dead in the face of certain defeat. Jorah's death culminates his arc poignantly as he sacrifices himself for his beloved queen, whilst the Mother of Dragons lives to see the series finale.
