Quentin Tarantino Writing Once Upon A Time In Hollywood Novel

Quentin Tarantino has big news for fans, as he recently announced that he would write a novel based on his Oscar-nominated screenplay, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. In classic Tarantino fashion, this recent venture delves into another moment of history and provides an alternative story, as he did with Inglorious Bastards. This time Tarantino turns his lens toward 60s Hollywood and injects his staple of violent fantasies into historical events once again. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood is one of Tarantino’s most critically successful films receiving 10 Oscar nominations and won Brad Pitt the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood follows TV actor Rick Dalton (Leonardo Decaprio) alongside his best friend and stuntman Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt), who are trying to remain relevant in the harsh film industry. Throughout the story, their paths get intertwined with Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie) and other historical figures from the period like Charles Manson (Damon Herriman). The movie feels like a contemporary fairytale where each character’s storyline weaves together perfectly to provide an in-depth look into Tarantino’s reimagining of 60s Hollywood. Although many of the staples of Tarantino’s directorial style are present, like editing and over-the-top violence, a few traditions were omitted in this feature.

Screencrush recently reported that Tarantino would adapt his Oscar-nominated screenplay into a book that expands upon Cliff and Rick’s stories and includes additional scenes that were not featured in the three-hour movie. For years, Tarantino has wanted to write novels because he was obsessed with the movie novelizations that accompanied the film releases of his youth. HarperCollins, Tarantino’s publisher, also announced that he would be writing a nonfiction book called Cinema Speculation, which will dive into Tarantino’s love for the movies of the 1970s. Tarantino's full quote about the Once Upon A Time In Hollywood book is below:

“In the seventies movie novelizations were the first adult books I grew up reading. And to this day I have a tremendous amount of affection for the genre. So as a movie-novelization aficionado, I’m proud to announce Once Upon A Time In Hollywood my contribution to this often marginalized, yet beloved sub-genre in literature. I’m also thrilled to further explore my characters and their world in a literary endeavor that can (hopefully) sit alongside its cinematic counterpart.”

Tarantino’s decision to expand Once Upon A Time In Hollywood into a novel demonstrates there was a lot he didn’t get to show us in the movie. Although the film is critically respected, the movie has a three-hour run-time, too lengthy for many casual viewers. For fans, the book will bring a more in-depth look at the sinister world Tarantino made on-screen because, unlike movies, books are not restricted by the length of the story. If this writing experience provides a positive venture for Tarantino, fans could see more writing from their beloved director in the future.

As an adept storyteller, Tarantino’s adaptation of Once Upon A Time In Hollywood will surely provide a provocative book for his readers. Throughout his career, Tarantino has continually cited the various inspirations that influenced his movies. Hopefully, through his writing, Tarantino will reveal more about his processes and thinking as a storyteller. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood is just one of many Tarantino movies that inspire many working in the film industry today. The novel will hopefully continue inspiring aspiring filmmakers and fans alike.
