Superstore’s America Ferrera Hopes To Return As Amy Before Show Ends

America Ferrera hopes to return as Amy before the eventual series finale of Superstore. Starring Ferrera, Superstore debuted on NBC in 2015 and featured Ferrera in her second headlining position for the network following the success of Ugly Betty. In addition to portraying the starring role of Amy Sosa, a single mother working her way up the ladder of the Cloud 9 Superstore, Ferrera also served as the executive producer of the workplace sitcom.

Created by Justin Spitzer, Superstore follows a group of oddball employees who work at Cloud 9 store 1217, a discount warehouse store in St. Louis, Missouri. During its run, Superstore has garnered praise for doling out hilarious moments while tackling topical issues. Earlier this year, Ferrera announced she would exit the series at the end of season 5 to pursue other projects. However, after production delays due to coronavirus, Ferrera’s exit was postponed and the sitcom’s landmark 100th episode served as her farewell. Now the actress reveals Amy could walk through the doors of Cloud 9 in the future.

Per NBC, Ferrera reveals she hopes to return as Amy before Superstore comes to an end. Days after Ferrera’s farewell episode, NBC released a look at the actresses' final moments on set. Speaking on her five years with the series, Ferrera expressed her gratitude to the cast and crew on her final day of filming and said, “I haven’t taken a moment of it for granted. I’m so grateful. Thank you to all of you, and I hope to be back, and get to see you before it's all done.” Check out Ferrera’s emotional farewell speech below:

Of course, Ferrera opting to return for a proper farewell has helped to jump-start season 6 of the sitcom while allowing fans a chance for some closure. Featuring various time jumps, Superstore season 6 will continue to display the comedic talents of the cast. Now deemed essential employees, the crew at Cloud 9 are expected to experience numerous misadventures as they navigate the hurdles of panicking customers, new rules, and Cloud 9 without store manager Amy.

Ferrera has been regarded as the anchor of Superstore, both on and off-screen. Popular series who bid farewell to a central character, such as Fox Mulder in The X-files, Fiona Gallagher in Shameless, and Michael Scott in The Office, seemingly tote a short shelf-life after the lead’s exit. However, Superstore appears to be a series with numerous storylines left to tell. Ferrera stating she is open to making a return solidifies the great relationship she has with the series and gives viewers some hope at seeing her as Amy in Superstore in the future.
