Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory is considered to be one of the ultimate family-friendly movies. This 1970s classic brought the popular Roald Dahl book to life in an incredible manner, with amazing props, fantastic songs, and an incredible cast of characters.
The film showcases a brilliant bunch of characters, all of whom have very different personalities and traits. Some of them are very easy to like, while others are frustratingly annoying—though, in the case of most of the kids featured in the movie, that was almost certainly intentional. However, that variety is what makes the movie so unique, as each character brings something totally different to the movie, with certain characters becoming clear fan favorites throughout the film.
10 Veruca Salt
Veruca Salt might only be a young person, but that doesn't stop her from being the least likable character within this movie. She plays the classic spoiled brat to perfection, and that is what makes everyone dislike her so much, with Veruca believing she's better than everyone else.
Veruca is incredibly demanding of her father, showing no kindness or compassion to anybody at all. If there's something to be had, Veruca wants it and she has no problem in just demanding it, rather than showing any politeness, which is why she's such an unlikeable character.
9 Arthur Slugworth
Arthur Slugworth, who ends up being revealed as Mr. Wilkinson later in the film, is actually quite a difficult character to rank in terms of likability. Initially, it seems like he is the villain in the movie with the eerier way that he behaves and the pressures that he places onto the children to steal.
However, it ends up being revealed that this was all a test put in place by Willy Wonka to see who he should give the factory to. He's only a supporting character and doesn't do enough to become one of the most likable people, especially with the creepy manner in which he behaves for most of his screentime.
8 Violet Beauregarde
Violet Beauregarde is showcased heavily throughout the movie, but she is not one of the nicest characters. Everything about her is negative, as she treats others with no compassion or kindness at all, often snapping at others and spending all of the time she can to talk about herself.
Violet is an incredibly selfish person who thinks about herself before everybody else, which is showcased heavily when she takes the ever-lasting gobstopper and eats it despite being warned not to do that. Her inability to listen or show respect to other people is what makes her one of the least likable characters in this movie.
7 Augustus Gloop
Augustus Gloop just isn't showcased as much as the other characters, as he gets sucked up the pipes from the chocolate river fairly early on in the movie. He may be around for only a short time, but he's easily one of the most tolerable of the film's quartet of bratty children.
He comes out with a few funny lines, and, unlike the previously mentioned characters, he's never overly rude to anybody. While he shows no interest in talking to people or asking questions, the fact he's not completely horrible to others makes him more likable.
6 Mike Teavee
Mike Teavee is quite a likable character, for the most part, showcasing his overwhelming excitement when it comes to the media section. Throughout the tour, he proves himself to be quite inquisitive, often asking questions and trying to find out more information.
While there is no doubt that he's addicted to television, he's not rude or annoying like other characters. Mike Teavee can also be quite funny at times, which is what sets him apart from a lot of characters, with his confident and charismatic personality.
5 Mrs. Bucket
The Bucket family are the main characters of this movie, with the story being told from their perspective. Because of that, Mrs. Bucket is a character that is shown a lot in the early stages of the film. During that time, it is very clear that she spends all of her time just trying to help her son and make life as fun as possible for him.
She's clearly working herself to the bone, and that is certainly a very likable trait. It's impossible not to feel some sort of sympathy and warmth towards her as a character. She might not be around as much as some others, but she's certainly one of the most likable.
4 Oompa-Loompas
The Oompa-Loompas are some of the most well-known characters in movie history, which is why it's no surprise they're some of the most likable. They provide many of the musical numbers for this movie, which brings some of the greatest scenes in the film.
They only pop up when a character is in trouble, but the way they deal with things is often a lot of fun. They're the perfect sidekick characters, and they make the film very exciting, which is why they're so important as characters.
3 Willy Wonka
There are moments throughout the movie where Willy Wonka isn't particularly nice to people, as he can be quite blunt and to the point. However, for the most part, he is a lot of fun. Sure, Willy Wonka is very eccentric and can be quite unpredictable, but a lot of that is just for show.
As he proves at the very end with Charlie Bucket, he can have a much softer and gentler side, with an ability to give to others and be as kind as possible. He's funny, and, while he's unique, he's certainly one of the most likable characters because of that, with Gene Wilder doing an amazing job within this role.
2 Grandpa Joe Bucket
When it comes to likability, there is no doubt that Grandpa Joe Bucket is one of the best. He starts out the film being bed-ridden, having no energy due to not having walked in years. Yet, seeing the way he springs to life at the thought of heading into the chocolate factory is one of the most heartwarming moments of the film.
It's clear he's a true family man, and, unlike the other adults in the film, Grandpa Joe obviously wants to spend time with Charlie. He's a lot of fun throughout the movie, providing some amazing one-liners as he tries to help Charlie as much as possible, all while still having a good time.
1 Charlie Bucket
Out of all the characters within this film, there is no doubt about who is the most likable. Charlie Bucket is the ultimate example of kindness and how people even in difficult circumstances can still find happiness. Charlie grows up in poverty, but he doesn't let that dampen his spirits.
Everything he does is for the family, as he tries his best to help out through his paper round. He tries to make everyone else smile, and, even when he gets into the factory, he's the one who doesn't show any greed. Charlie doesn't want to take anything from Willy Wonka, and, instead, he just wants to enjoy the experience, proving himself to be the nicest person in the movie.
