Wonder Woman 1984 Director Patty Jenkins Reacts To HBO Max Release

Patty Jenkins posted her thoughts about the news that Wonder Woman: 1984 would be hitting theaters and HBOMax the same day. The film has faced a slew of delays because of the coronavirus pandemic. It was initially set to be released in December of 2019, before moving up a month to November. The film was subsequently pushed back to June 2020 and hopped around the release calendar from there before landing on Christmas Day. The film has held steady on its release date as every other 2020 blockbuster fled the calendar for hopefully greener pastures. Jenkins previously debunked rumors of the film hitting HBOMax.

Starring Gal Gadot as the titular hero, Wonder Woman: 1984 is one of the most anticipated DCEU films. The first film was a massive success for the faltering cinematic universe, one that will always be compared to the MCU's enormous success. Wonder Woman is set to face off against Kristen Wiig's Cheetah when the film is ultimately released. While the film takes place in the eighties, it is likely it could lay the groundwork for future DCEU films, typical for superhero films.

Jenkins posted her reaction to the news on her Twitter. Jenkins urged fans to see it in theaters if they could safely and, if they couldn't, watch the film at home. The director said the move is meant to spread joy during what nearly everyone calls a major downer of a year. She ends her post by expressing the joy she and the rest of the people involved in making the film felt, hoping it will bring the same to those who watch it.

Bringing the film straight to HBOMax is sure to help Warner Bros. in several ways. What they lose in potential box office take, they could potentially gain back in subscribers. While the platform is not struggling, it is nowhere near as successful as Disney+. A monthly subscription to the service is almost double the price of a movie ticket. With Zack Snyder's Justice League set to hit the platform sometime in 2021, Wonder Woman: 1984 could be the perfect way to reel in DC fans who were hesitant to subscribe. Additionally, the timing of its release could attract families looking for something fun to watch in lieu of leaving the house and going to an actual theater.

The move is unprecedented for a blockbuster of this size and one that shows the ever-changing moviegoing landscape as the coronavirus pandemic continues to ravage the United States. There is no indication that HBOMax users will have to pay an additional fee to access the film, similar to what Disney+ did earlier this year with MulanJenkins' reaction is a clear indicator that the decision was weighed heavily before it was ultimately made. While the decision could ultimately affect the studio's bottom line, releasing Wonder Woman: 1984 for free, just in time for Christmas, is one way for the studio, and for Jenkins, to be able to do something good for fans that have waited quite a long time to see the film.
