From stand-up specials to sitcoms and comedy series, Netflix has always offered a wide range of comedic content. Every year, the streaming service releases a new slate of comedy series (and movies), and in 2020, there were more than a dozen new additions to the line-up.
As with series in any other genre, not every single comedy release in 2020 was a hit out of the park. Nonetheless, many were fabulous. These are the 10 best based on Rotten Tomatoes scores and, interestingly, the top six all rank above 90 percent.
10 #blackAF – 46%
Kenya Barris rose to fame for creating the ABC sitcom Black-ish. This sitcom features him as a fictionalized version of himself living as a successful Black man with "new money." The various characters all represent people in real life, too.
While not achieving a particularly high rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the series has been renewed for a second season. The title references the popular social media hashtag symbol and the "AF" refers to internet slang that denotes emphasis, as in "as f***."
9 Sneakerheads – 57%
Devin was once a sneakerhead, but since becoming a stay-at-home dad, he has been out of the game, so to speak. But when an old friend visits with a crazy idea, the pair decide to go on the hunt for a pair of sneakers that sneakerheads everywhere have obsessed over, without knowing if they even really exist.
There are just six episodes in the first season, which premiered in September. There's no word yet on if Netflix will be bringing it back for a season two.
8 The Duchess – 63%
One of many British comedy offerings on Netflix, in The Duchess, a single mother is raising her daughter in London while also trying to decide if she should have a second child. Complicating the situation is her ex and father to her child, a former boy band member, and her boyfriend, an orthodontist.
Premiering with six episodes in September, the show was both created by and stars Katherine Ryan.
7 Emily In Paris – 64%
Despite only launching in 2020, Emily in Paris ranks among Darren Star's top-rated shows, right alongside his other iconic projects like Beverly Hills, 90210 and Sex and the City.
Emily is a young and ambitious woman working at a marketing firm who ends up being given the opportunity to move to Paris for a year to help a new acquisition with their transition and special marketing campaigns. While she isn’t exactly warmly received by the stereotypical French co-workers, she finds her own path while building a new life.
6 Gentefied – 91%
At the heart of this comedy-drama are three Mexican American cousins trying to fulfill the American Dream while also rectifying that with their traditions.
Gentefied has been praised for being relatable, timely, and able to tackle serious subject matter in a comedic way. So it's no surprise it ranks above 90% and is among the top comedies from Netflix in 2020.
5 Julie And The Phantoms – 92%
Another kids show, this series is a musical comedy-drama. According to IMDb, it's not only among the highest-rated comedies of 2020, but it's also the highest-rated overall, to date.
Julie and the Phantoms is about a young girl who loses her love of music after losing her mother. That is until she accidentally calls up the spirits of the dead members of a 90s boy band called The Phantoms, and they help reignite her passion and rock out with her on stage.
4 Medical Police – 92%
A spin-off of the alt-comedy series Children's Hospital, which was a parody of typical medical dramas on television, Medical Police, instead, is a parody of spy thrillers. It stars Erinn Hayes and Rob Huebel as doctors who end up being hired as government agents to find a cure for a virus threatening the world.
But as you might find in a real spy thriller, the "doctor cops" discover that there's a conspiracy behind it all. The series, which features a long list of guest and recurring stars, including Malin Akerman, Jason Schwartzman, Lake Bell, Rob Corddry, and Lilly Singh, was one of the first comedies of the year, released way back in January.
3 Never Have I Ever – 96%
It's no surprise that this coming-of-age comedy-drama has been ranked so high, given that Mindy Kaling is behind it. And the series is arguably the most personal one she has ever created, as it is based, in part, on her own childhood growing up as an Indian American.
After the death of her father, 15-year-old Devi must try to deal with typical teenage life without him. Never Have I Ever has been lauded for portraying South Asians in a non-stereotypical way and the series has already been picked up for a second season.
2 Aunty Donna's Big Ol' House of Fun – 100%
While many readers might not even have heard of this series, given its high rating, it is obviously universally loved by those who did come across it and it features plenty of skits that are complete comedy gold.
An Australian sketch comedy series created by and starring the members of Aunty Donna, an Australian comedy group, it is among Netflix's latest comedy releases of the year, coming out in November.
1 The Baby-Sitters Club – 100%
With an impressive perfect rating, this comedy-drama is designed for teens and tweens, but it ranks as Netflix's best comedy to date. Based on the popular novel series by Ann M. Martin, a group of middle-school girls start their own babysitting business and the stories follow them along on their various adventures.
The Baby-Sitters Club has 10 episodes in its first season and has already been renewed for a second. This isn't the first time the story has been adapted for the screen: there was also a movie back in 1995.
