When Jovi Dufren took his Ukrainian love Yara Zaya to meet his mother Gwen in 90 Day Fiancé, little did know that he’d be left choosing sides. As Yara had already acted unreasonably by calling New Orleans smelly, and refusing to have a sleepover at his mother’s, Jovi should have expected the squabbles to follow. But amidst all of the fricassee and fiasco, there was Jovi’s dad who was missing from the scene, apparently for being away in Alaska to do his fishing job. And many curious fans were left wondering what exactly is it that 90 Day Fiancé star Jovi’s father does for a living.
During their very first interaction itself, 90 Day Fiancé fans were treated to Yara accusing Jovi’s mom of being controlling and getting called selfish in return. While Yara declared she wanted a Las Vegas wedding, Jovi’s mom wanted his grandparents to also be a part of a larger celebration. But, hesitant because of her own family not being able to attend, Yara put her foot down, to add one more to Gwen’s long list of red flags about her. However, Jovi stressed them further by adding he’d be having to rush off to work on his ship immediately, hinting at Yara and Gwen possibly having to spend a lot more together than expected. While fans are now familiar with Jovi’s underwater robotics work which keeps him at sea for “four weeks on, four weeks off,” he also mentioned how his father too, is away for a similar job. Could this mean that 90 Day Fiancé’s Yara could eventually bond with her mother-in-law over both their husbands being gone away for weeks on end?
According to AlaskaJobFinder, the fishing industry is Alaska’s largest private employer and currently has over 59,800 people for summer, seasonal, and year-round employment opportunities. Out of these, almost 32,000 are fishermen, and the state’s fisheries average over $10.6 billion in revenue per year, while also contributing to “nearly 61 percent of the volume of fish and seafood landed in the United States.” Interestingly, apart from its recent mention on 90 Day Fiancé, Alaskan fishing that focuses on over 9,000 miles of coastline, has also been featured on shows such as Deadliest Catch and Alaska Fish Wars.
However, as HowStuffWorks states, Alaskan fishing is also named “the most dangerous job” in the world. Alaskan fishermen literally risk life and limb to haul in the millions of tons of seafood that ends up on dinner plates. The hauling up nets, pelting rain, rouge waves, and icy decks make the work “lethal” while the cold water of Alaska, add to the unforgiving nature of its fishing environment. Crab fishing, especially, as often documented on Discovery’s Deadliest Catch, acts like a game of “Russian roulette" in the sea. But on the plus side, FishingJobs mentions that experienced crew members aboard crab vessels, draggers, and longliners may make “make $60,000 to $125,000 per year, or more” and those on salmon boats, typically earn anything between “$8,000 and $18,000 for their summer job.”
Considering 90 Day Fiancé’s Jovi’s father has experience in dealing with the roughest and most fatal of situations at work, managing the tussles between his wife Gwen and daughter-in-law Yara might be a piece of cake. But with Yara wanting to elope with his son, Jovi’s father actually showing up on 90 Day Fiancé so far, remains de-bait-able.
90 Day Fiancé airs Mondays at 8pm EST on TLC.
