Apple Arcade Hit Grindstone Is Out Now On Switch (And Discounted)

Grindstone, a hit from the iPhone's Apple Arcade service, is coming to Nintendo Switch today. Apple Arcade is the tech giant's own game subscription company; for $50 a year, subscribers get access to a wealth of mobile titles that they can play at their leisure. Unlike some of the app store's most notorious offerings, the titles on Apple Arcade are guaranteed free of both ads and microtransactions; players can enjoy them without any interruption.

Grindstone was a major success for this subscription service, and one of the strongest cases for subscribing to it at all. The action-puzzle game enticed players with its approachable concept and appealing, cartoonish art style, and it offered a huge amount of content, especially for a mobile game. Given how much of a success the game was for Apple, it was quite a surprise when, in August, developer Capypara Games announced that the game will be arriving on Nintendo Switch. This isn't the first time a mobile game has been ported to Switch; the console's unique nature as a hybrid home console and handheld device makes it uniquely suited to play host to major mobile games like this.

Almost half a year after that announcement, Grindstone is finally making its way to Nintendo Switch. The game was announced in an Indie World Showcase, just like it was back in August, and was then confirmed through a Twitter post from Capybara GamesGrindstone is officially available on the Switch, and what's more, players who jump on it quickly can even expect a 25% discount off their purchase. The eShop is infamous for featuring only minor discounts, so one fourth off a game like this is no small deal. Some may balk at paying $15-20 for a mobile game, but the game's reception speaks for itself.

There's always been precedent for Apple Arcade exclusives cropping up on consoles, but it's still good to see it happen with a beloved game like Grindstone. Not a lot of gamers take the mobile video game space too seriously, equating the whole industry with the disturbingly prevalent cheap cash grabs that infest the market, emblemized by titles like Candy Crush. But there are a lot of solid, imaginative, and very fun games in the mobile market, if one only knows where to look for them.

There were a lot of big updates in today's Indie World Showcase. Most notable, probably, was the news that Among Us is now playable on Nintendo Switch. In the face of these bigger announcements, fans could be forgiven for allowing the arrival of Grindstone to slip under their radar. But casual puzzle fans will surely rejoice at having access to this beloved mobile battler, and at seeing it grace their TV screens for the first time.
