CD Projekt Red Offering Full Refunds For Cyberpunk 2077's Physical Copies Itself

The wave of refunds continues as CD Projekt Red has announced it will be issuing full refunds for players who bought physical copies of Cyberpunk 2077. After the overwhelmingly negative reception of Cyberpunk 2077, CDPR promised players refunds for digital purchases, and now it says it will refund physical copies bought from brick and mortar retailers.

Cyberpunk 2077 was released on December 10 and was immediately met with harsh criticism for how poorly the game performed. While the game was virtually unplayable on base last-gen consoles, Cyberpunk 2077 continued to underperform on PC, Xbox Series X, and PlayStation 5 as well. The game is riddled with bugs, and buyers were not happy with what they purchased. As a result, CD Projekt Red told players to seek refunds for digital copies of the game - though that wasn't entirely possible until Sony itself agreed to starting processing refunds and even removed from the PlayStation's digital storefront.

Now, CD Projekt Red has issued yet another statement regarding refunds, and this time it was directed at buyers who purchased a physical copy of Cyberpunk 2077. The statement, which was posted to Twitter, states that it is CDPR's intention to issue a refund to every owner of a physical copy or digital copy bought at retail. CDPR also states that it will issue refunds out of pocket if necessary and that players who cannot receive a refund from the retailer need to contact CDPR directly with proof of purchase. This is a one-time initiative, and players who are seeking a refund for their physical copy have until December 21 to reach out to CD Projekt Red.

Having already suffered a great financial loss from the release of Cyberpunk 2077, paying for refunds out of pocket is sure to deal a massive monetary blow to CD Projekt Red. While CDPR has ridden the wave of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's success for the past five years, it will be interesting to see how far that game's success can sustain it. Having already lost $1.8 billion in stock prices, things aren't looking too good for CDPR.

It's hard to think of a game's release that even comes close to the travesty that is Cyberpunk 2077. While games have released in the past that have been met with disappointment, this has to be a new low for gaming. How CDPR will bounce back from this is a complete mystery. Will the promised updates be enough to appease gamers? Will CD Projekt Red pull off a No Man's Sky-like comeback? Or will this be the demise of a once-great studio?
