Players scouring the open world of Cyberpunk 2077 have found an unfinished portion of the world that sends their characters falling into the empty abyss that is the out of bounds area. Due to the sheer scale of most open-world games, areas like this are almost inevitable, especially in the months right after launch. It's almost impossible for testers and internal teams to touch every single inch of pavement in a completed city right before it goes out to the public, but the critical mass of players on a popular game can do that in spades and discover tiny inconsistencies to fix up in the latest patch.
Of course, CD Projekt Red has a lot to worry about when it comes to patching its latest game. Cyberpunk 2077 launched in a sorry state on its targeted console hardware, the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Players have complained of the game freezing, bugging out, and crashing to the dashboard. Newer consoles and the PC can power through these issues to a degree, but the problems on older hardware are so pronounced that Sony has taken the game off its digital store shelves and other retailers are offering players refunds if they want them.
So, while the now-famous Night City hole to nowhere - as shared by players like Redditor BurritoGlasses - is a problem, it may not be the top priority for the team for a while. In a video clip highlighting the area, BurritoGlasses shows the hole, which is located in a tucked-away corner of what appears to be Santo Domingo. The player has loaded several times and gone to the area on several save files, but there's always a hole that takes their player under the city for a brief view at how a developer sees the open world before dying, hitting a loading screen, and warping right back to where the hole is.
One of the things that players have noticed about Night City that differs from a lot of modern open worlds is its lack of barriers and invisible walls. With the various movement abilities players procure throughout the adventure, navigating above and beyond where the game intends is a simple matter. Once there, players can see all sorts of spots that were left unfinished in the shipped game. It's not all as bad as a giant hole in the ground, but finding the reality-breaking edges of Night City is an interesting way to spend one's time once the story campaign is in the rearview mirror.
Another reason Night City might be full of more holes, jagged edges and other unfinished work is that Cyberpunk 2077 was finished in 2020 from the homes of developers rather than CD Projekt Red's office in Poland. Adapting to a new working environment while also rushing to finish one of the most complicated undertakings in gaming history is an unimaginable feat, so players shouldn't blame the team for these errors. Instead of pointing and laughing at what was left unfinished, marvel at how much was achieved and know that the team is likely still working through the holiday trying to make it even more impressive.
Cyberpunk 2077 is available to purchase on Stadia, PC, and Xbox. PlayStation users can still buy physical copies at retail.
