Destiny 2 Crossplay Officially Coming In 2021 With Year 4 Update

Bungie shared a new Destiny 2 development update this week, and it's chock-full of exciting features on their way to Year 4 in 2021. Among a few teasers for new content in Season 13 and Season 14, the developer threw in a small cross-gen announcement that is sure to get fans pumped to play Destiny 2 with their friends in the new year.

Destiny 2 Year 4 began in November with the release of the Beyond Light expansion, where players traveled to Jupiter's moon Europa to confront the Fallen Kell Eramis and look into the plague of Darkness. In a press release over the summer, Bungie touched on the future of Destiny 2, revealing that two more expansions are on their way following Beyond Light - The Witch Queen in 2021 and Lightfall in 2022. There's not a ton of information available on the next expansion at the moment, but thanks to Bungie's latest development update, fans can at least get an idea of what else is in store for 2021.

Bungie revealed in a post on the development blog on Tuesday that "crossplay is coming in 2021." That's all the developers had to say on the matter, so unfortunately, there's no exact timeline for crossplay support. What this means, though, is that Destiny 2 players can finally play with each other on different systems, no matter if one friend is on PC, another friend is on console, and so on.

In addition to crossplay, Bungie announced that the new transmog system, which allows players to borrow the style of any gear they've previously collected, is (tentatively) slated to arrive alongside Season 14. Fans knew back in October that the transmog system was on its way to Destiny 2, but having a release timeline makes it all the more exciting. Plus, the Vault of Glass raid will return and two new strikes (Fallen S.A.B.E.R. and Devil’s Lair) are coming in Season 13, along with DDOS protection for players on all consoles. Finally, the Legendary and Master Lost Sector rotation will receive its own expansion with new exotic armor.

Full-on crossplay support will be a huge step up from Destiny 2's current cross-save system, which allows users to transfer game data from one platform to the next. The cross-save system was highly-requested by fans who wanted to move from console to PC, but it still limited people to only playing with others on the same platform. So, those who did move to PC had to leave their Destiny 2 console buddies  behind. There's likely still quite some time to wait for all these new features to roll out, but 2021 is already looking to be a busy year for Bungie.
