A brand new campaign expansion for Gears 5, titled Hivebusters, launches today alongside a large free update for the game. Gears 5, the fifth game in the third-person shooter series, was developed by The Coalition and released in September of last year. The game features a single-player story mode as well as a three-player cooperative mode.
Gears 5's Hivebusters expansion was announced in October as a story-driven continuation of the game's main campaign. The expansion will star Team Scorpio, the eponymous Hivebusters, who also appear in the game's cooperative Escape mode. This mode sees players battling their way through an alien hive, fighting against both enemies and a ticking time limit. Scorpio Squad has also appeared in tie-in materials for the game, such as comic books, but Hivebusters will be their first appearance in a single-player story campaign.
The Gears of War website has officially announced the launch of Hivebusters, which is available now for $20. The story acts as a prequel to the main campaign and Escape mode, detailing the Scorpio Squad's first mission to destroy a Swarm hive. The 3-hour expansion will also feature a brand new setting, the volcanic and infested Galangi Islands. Hivebusters launches alongside Title Update 12, which will bring a number of updates and fixes to the game. Among these changes are a new boss in Horde mode, changes to the Combat Medic class and multiple bug fixes.
Despite launching more than a year ago, Gears 5 has seen an influx of additional content recently. These updates and additions are likely meant to coincide with the release of the Xbox Series X/S last month, as the series has been a flagship Xbox exclusive franchise since its inception back in 2006. A recent update to the game added a huge amount of free multiplayer content, including seven new characters, five new maps and the classic flamethrower, the Scorcher. A recent update also added popular WWE tag-team The New Day to Gears 5 as multiplayer characters, allowing gamers to mow down the Swarm as Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods or Big E.
The Coalition's post-launch support of Gears 5 is admirable, with a ton of new content being released in the past few months. Much of this content has been free for all players, including Title Update 12, but Hivebusters' status as a brand new story campaign warrants the additional price. With Scorpio Squad being previously utilized as only minor supporting characters, Gears 5 fans can now experience the deadly trio in a story-driven setting.
Gears 5: Hivebusters is available now on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
