Glee star Heather Morris apologizes on social media for a series of now-deleted tweets she posted about her late co-star Mark Salling. Arguably one of the most infamous shows on television, Glee began in 2009 and centered on the ragtag members of a high school glee club. At its peak, Glee was a critical and awards darling, winning over audiences with its infectious musical numbers and progressive storylines. Over the course of its six seasons, Glee lost some of its luster, though it still remains a key part of television history.
Since Glee came to an end, and even before then, the series has been struck by tragedy multiple times. First, series star Cory Monteith passed away in 2013 while the show was still on the air, and an entire episode was dedicated to him and his character Finn. Then, in 2015, Salling (Puck on Glee) died of an apparent suicide after pleading guilty to child pornography possession. Finally, and most recently, Naya Rivera (Santana) died this past summer after an accidental drowning. Surviving Glee cast members have taken several strides to remembering their dearly departed co-stars.
Morris, who played cheerleader-turned-glee club member Brittany, landed in some hot water last week after speaking out about a fan-edited photo of the Glee cast that placed a vomit emoji over Salling's face. In a series of tweets that have since been deleted (via Los Angeles Times), Morris called out the offensiveness of the picture and tried to explain the complicated feelings that come from mourning someone who committed reprehensible acts. "We did not just lose 2 cast members, we lost 3. And it is SO incredible tough to have to act like that 3rd one is invisible, because even though his actions are unjustifiable, he was a part of our family at one point and he was mentally SICK. Yes pedophilia is a sickness ...," one tweet read. However, following fan backlash, Morris replaced them all with an apology. "To all those who felt triggered by my message, I want to sincerely apologize for the harm I caused," Morris wrote. The full post can be seen down below.
Though Morris' initial words might have sparked fan outrage and came from a place of hurt, one can see what she meant by it. For better or worse, Salling was a part of the Glee cast, and his death surely impacted those who worked with him. That does not mean fans suddenly need to remember him fondly; in fact, his crimes rightfully shouldn't be diminished. Still, Morris has a right to process her emotions about this, though she could have done it in a more nuanced manner.
Fans can decide how they wish to feel about Morris' comments and her apology. The Glee star has, like everyone, endured a lot throughout the year, particularly following the passing of Rivera. Hopefully she and the rest of the Glee cast can find some peace in the holiday season and enter 2021 in a better emotional place.
