Google Pixel Update: Call Holding Assistant, Better Photo Editing & More

Google Pixel phone owners can now download an exciting new update that includes several additions and improvements to their phones. While many new features debuted with the company's new Google Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G phones, some of those same features are also making there way to the Pixel 4a, 4, and 3 through a software update. In addition, Pixel 5 and 4a 5G owners are also getting some improvements with Google's December feature update.

This is the latest "feature drop" update to arrive for Pixel phone owners. A previous 'drop' took place in December of last year and on that occasion Google added updates to Google Photos, Call Screen, Duo video calls, and more. Since then, the company has stopped providing feature updates to its Pixel 2 series and therefore, the older Pixel phone is now excluded from this latest round of incoming features.

The latest update from Google focuses on call-holding, screen-sharing, battery-saving, and even more changes to Google Photos. Google Pixel owners can access their phone's system settings to retrieve the latest update. Or, if the phone signals that an update is available, they can tap the notification and follow the on-screen instructions to download and apply the update. Participating Pixel phones can be updated at any time so, those giving a Pixel phone as a gift can rest assured the new feature drop will be available, once the phone is set up and connected to a Wi-Fi network.

Hold For Me is a great new addition to older Pixel phones as it allows users to continue using other apps while waiting on hold. Essentially, Google Assistant waits on behalf of the user and notifies them once the line is open. Duo is also gaining an update to its screen-sharing feature that enables its use when more than two parties are on the same video call. For those that already make use of Pixel's Now Playing feature, songs that are stored in the history can now easily (and collectively) be exported as a YouTube Music playlist. Not to mention, there are also new options available for customizing the home screen.

In addition, Pixel phones are also receiving a couple of Google Photos improvements. Not only does the app now provide a redesigned layout to quickly access any editing option, but new presets are also available to provide more effects to photos than ever before. The last big addition to older Pixel phones is Extreme Battery Saver mode. Once enabled, the phone will limit the power consumption of certain apps running in the background, prolonging the life of the phone's battery as a result.

The update is not just for older phones either with Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 gaining accuracy and efficiency improvements to Adaptive Battery and GPS, while also gaining Adaptive Sound. The latter of which looks to intelligently adjust audio played through a newer Pixel phone to better match the device's surroundings. For consumers currently in the market for a new phone, these are also features they can look forward to, should they choose a Pixel for the first time, and another example of how Google keeps adding new functionality to its devices long after they were purchased and outside of major OS upgrades.
