Hitman 3 will take advantage of the PlayStation 5 DualSense controller's adaptive triggers and haptic feedback. Since the console's launch last month, only a select number of titles have genuinely put the new controller's impressive technology to good use. Thus, it's nice to learn that an eagerly anticipated AAA game will allow the DualSense to shine a little brighter.
The DualSense's haptic feedback essentially standardizes what is otherwise a pretty niche rumble feature. Meanwhile, adaptive triggers take the controller to another level, offering immersion unlike anything else available on consoles right now. These two features have, thus far, been best put to use in PlayStation 5's pre-installed game, Astro's Playroom. Now, it sounds as though IO Interactive's final World of Assassination adventure will similarly turn the DualSense into an experience well worth having.
IO Interactive's communications manager, Travis Barbour, recently took to the PlayStation Blog to share new gameplay-related details. In so doing, Barbour outlined exactly what players can expect from Hitman 3 when playing on PlayStation 5 with a DualSense controller in hand. According to the developer, every gun in Agent 47's next outing will make use of DualSense's adaptive triggers. "You’ll feel an authentic sensation with each shot you fire," Barbour said. That level of authenticity should also be felt when 47 fires automatic weapons, as IOI is working to "simulate recoil with every bullet." Each weapon will additionally feature unique haptics tied to their distinctive sound profiles.
Barbour went on to describe an example of Hitman 3's unique adaptive trigger support. When using the sniper rifle, shown in the most recent gameplay trailer, a gentle squeeze of R2 will cause the button to "reach a tension point that will resist [the player's] pressure." Players will then need to keep their finger on the tension point to activate the game's Focus effect, which slows the world to a crawl. Once players have their shot perfectly lined up and ready to fire upon, pushing past the tension point will result in a "clicking" feel of the trigger.
It seems IO Interactive is taking more than a few extra steps to ensure Hitman 3 genuinely feels different when played on the PS5's DualSense controller. As of now, however, it remains to be seen how the device's technology will be put to use beyond Agent 47's arsenal of guns.
The studio, which serves as both developer and publisher, isn't only working to guarantee Hitman 3 feels good. IOI's ambitious efforts are additionally evident in the upcoming title's stunning visuals. The game's sheer beauty is especially on display in the Chongqing location reveal trailer.
Hitman 3 hits Google Stadia, Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S on January 20, 2021.
