Ron Swanson is often considered the breakout character of Parks And Recreation. Many aspects of the character are based on actor Nick Offerman's real life. Just like Ron, Offerman loves carpentry and Scotch. He is also skilled at playing the saxophone. Part of the character is also inspired by an unnamed real-life Libertarian politician.
Thanks to Ron's popularity, the frequent snub of Nick Offerman by the Emmys always drew much controversy during the show's run. Modern Family's Tyler Gerald Burrell even stated that Offerman deserved an Emmy more than him. The following are a couple of hidden details fans missed about him.
10 His Strange Sleeping Disorder
While Leslie is known for only sleeping 3.5 hours every night, Ron gets too much sleep that he even manages to fight people while at it. In the Season 2 episode titled "Telethon," he confesses to Leslie that he suffers from a sleeping disorder known as Sleep Fighting. Does it stress him? Not at all.
When Leslie feels pity for him and declares that it must be sad to have such a condition, Ron disagrees. He argues that it's only sad if he loses the fights, which he rarely does.
9 His Fascination With Military Aviation
Ron appears to be a big fan of military aviation. On the table behind his desk, a picture of a crashed WW1 fighter jet can be seen. There is also another picture showing a WW2 Spitfire.
In the Season 4 episode "The Trial of Leslie Knope," Ron expresses his desire to buy a wood model of a B-25 Mitchell aircraft. April thinks he is buying it for her but he quickly corrects her, telling her that he is doing it for himself. He is even angry that April interrupted him as he was making the online purchase.
8 He Has Watched 'Three' Movies In His Life
Ron claims he has only watched three movies in his entire life. These movies are Patton, Bridge on the River Kwai, and Herbie: Fully Loaded, which is a favorite for Diane's kids. However, his figure seems higher when taking into account the proceedings of some specific episodes.
For example, in the Season 5 episode "Animal Control" Ron mentions that he watched a movie with Diane and her children in which an orange fish was separated from its dad. The movie with that premise is Finding Nemo. In Season 3's "Eagleton," Leslie makes him watch The Dirty Dozen. Also, in Season 3's "Andy and April's Fancy Party" Tom informs everyone that Julia Roberts having an impromptu wedding and Ron asks "Is that the toothy girl from Mystic Pizza?" This means he has seen the movie.
7 He Has Only Been Without His Moustache A Few Times
It's hard to picture Ron without his mustache. One can easily assume that he's never been without it. However, that's not the case. During his time in the series, he has appeared without his full mustache thrice.
The first time he's seen without his full mustache is when part of it gets torn off due to friction. This happens when he marries Tammy Two for the second time. The second time it happens, he shaves it all off, after Tammy demands that he does so. The third time, it is due to unfortunate circumstances. His mustache gets burned when he lights Lil Sebastian’s memorial flame.
6 The Vehicles He Has Owned
Ron enjoys driving but he has only two types of vehicles in the entire series. The car he uses the most is a 1997 Buick Park Avenue Ultra which is burgundy in color. He mentioned that he has been in possession of the car for a decade and isn't planning on discarding it any time soon.
He also owned a 1978 Ford F-series truck, which was red in color. He damages the vehicle after he rams it into a house. After the incident, his interest in it declines so he gives it to Chris.
5 He Has A Type
Ron isn't just attracted to any woman. He has a type, which is "Strong, salt-of-the-Earth, self-possessed woman at the top of her field. Your Steffi Graf's, your Sheryl Swoopes."
He reveals this information to Leslie when the two visit a strip club in the Season 2 episode "Tom's Divorce." In the episode, Leslie tries to encourage the strippers to change their lives but they ignore her. Ron also states that strippers don't get him excited. The only thing he likes about strip clubs is the food.
4 The Xena Warrior Princes Reference
Ron enjoys associating himself with female-themes activities. At one point, he wins the Woman of the Year award thanks to the Camp Athena project set up by Leslie.
He goes on to refer to Camp Athena as "Camp Xena." Interestingly, he later marries middle school vice principal Diane Lewis, portrayed by Lucy Lawless. The actress is mostly known for her role as Xena Warrior Princess. She is also the first woman he is romantically involved with who isn't called Tammy.
3 He Has Only Gotten Drunk Once
Ron has a high tolerance for alcohol, which is a trait that runs in the family. His mother is a heavy drinker too while his father used to pour alcohol on his corn flakes. Ron has also confessed that his weekly consumption of alcohol is a full shelf.
The character has never gotten drunk in the sitcom except on one occasion. Tom's new drink, Snake Juice, is what gets him. When Tom launches it in Season 3, Ron is reluctant to try it but drinks anyway. After consuming a high amount, he gets drunk for the first time and begins dancing to pop single. However, he avoids a hangover while everyone else who drinks Snake Juice ends up with one.
2 The List Of Things He Hates
There is a list of things that Ron hates. First on the list is birthdays. He has done everything possible to make sure no one knows his birthday so as to avoid a surprise party. He later mentions that Baskin-Robbins is the only person who knows. However, Leslie figures it out too. He also hates skim milk, which he labels "water pretending to be milk."
Ron hates lying too. He even chose to lose a court case instead of lying instead to win. He also hates most places that aren't America. He detests Canada and France more. The last thing on his list is pop music.
1 His Tattoos?
Actor Nick Offerman, who portrays Ron, has tattoos on his arms. However, Ron doesn't. The tattoos are either edited out or covered up by using makeup.
However, in Season 2's "Practice Date," Ron can be seen with tattoos in the biceps of both arms, right under his short-sleeved shirt. The tattoos never appear again. It can thus be assumed that the production team forgot to cover them up or edit them out. It would be nice for Ron to have tattoos too.
