PS5 Exclusive Returnal Release Date Leaks Ahead Of The Game Awards

Housemarque's latest project, Returnal, had its release date leaked ahead of The Game Awards 2020. Both publisher Sony and Housemarque have remained quiet about when the adventure will make its way to PlayStation 5. However, recent trailers revolving around PlayStation's future games line-up suggest a launch in the first half of 2020.

The crew at Housemarque is best known for twin-stick shooter classics like Super Stardust and Dead Nation. Housemarque's early success on the PlayStation 4 in the side-scrolling shoot 'em up Resogun especially put its name not the map. But recent years have seen the studio step away from its more arcadey roots, due the genre's perceived slow decline. Thus, the group is now hard at work on Returnal, a third-person sci-fi shooter announced during Sony's  PS5 reveal event that could very well take the new hardware by storm next spring.

Early news about the title's release date comes courtesy of a post that went live on ResetEra. The post in question boasts a screenshot of a listing for Returnal via Best Buy Canada's online storefront. (Surprisingly, Walmart Canada doesn't sit at the center of a store leak this time.) According to the listing, Returnal's sci-fi world is set to land on the PS5 come March 19, 2021.

This adds an interesting wrinkle to Sony's still mysterious release schedule for 2021. In the aforementioned November ad for PS5 games, a tag at the bottom of the screen noted that Returnal, Gran Turismo 7, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart are "anticipated" for a release in the first half of 2021. Billboards for Ratchet & Clank recently went up in Glasgow, too, suggesting an imminent launch for Insomniac's next project. So how close together might Sony roll out all of these titles, especially when taking into consideration Horizon Forbidden West's nebulous 2021 launch window?

Perhaps 2018's slate of PS4 exclusives may offer a bit of insight. That February saw Sony release Bluepoint Games' highly-acclaimed Shadow of the Colossus remake. The award-winning God of War from SIE Santa Monica Studio hit stores not too long thereafter in April 2018. Sony then rounded out the first half of the year with a second-party exclusive from the company's then close partner, Quantic Dream. That title, Detroit: Become Human, released in late May, only a few weeks after God of War. It stands to reason that the first few months of 2021 could be similarly packed with PlayStation exclusives, adding some credence to the leaked Returnal release date.
