Schitt's Creek Meets Friends: 5 Couples That Would Work (& 5 That Wouldn't)

Sometimes, a sitcom comes along that seems destined to become a classic part of popular culture. That is certainly true of both Friends and Schitt’s Creek, both of which, in their very different ways, have earned their place in the canon of television. A key part of the success of both series, of course, is the presence of amazing characters. After all, no sitcom can survive without the men and women that help to make the comedy land, and it certainly helps that both shows have quite a few relationships that are very successful.

That being the case, it’s fun to think about a mashup of these two shows and which couples from the shows work together and which ones would not.

10 Would: David And Phoebe

It’s actually quite fun to think about David and Phoebe getting together as a couple. After all, both of them are free spirits, not willing to be tied down by the expectations that others have of them (though David does struggle with this, sometimes).

What’s more, Phoebe is a very kind and loving person, and she’s the type that would give David the kind of support that he needs as he embarks on his various ventures. She would love him without judgment.

9 Wouldn’t: Alexis And Ross

Now, it has to be said that Alexis doesn’t always have the best taste in men, and she doesn’t always know when she has a good thing (it's one of the saddest things about her).

Even she, however, would be able to see that things just wouldn’t work with Ross. Aside from everything else, she would almost certainly lose patience (quite quickly) with his annoying tendency to mope and whine about literally everything, and he would equally certainly feel like she wasn’t giving him the love and support he needed (and he needs a lot of it).

8 Would: Phoebe And Moira

Just as Phoebe and David would be a good match, she’d also be a good match with the Rose matriarch, Moira. In fact, there are quite a few similarities between these two characters, since both of them march to the beat of their own drummer.

It’s easy to imagine the two of them ending up together and, what’s more, bringing out the absolute weirdness in one another without either of them judging the other. In particular, Phoebe would help Moira to work through some of her emotional issues (some of which make her a very sad character). Plus, they are both artistic in terms of their temperament.

7 Wouldn’t: Monica And David

In many ways, Monica and David are very similar types of people. Both of them tend to be a bit neurotic, and both of them attempt to work through the trauma of their youth through unhealthy coping mechanisms.

While this might make them appreciate one another--since they both know the struggle--in this case, it seems like they are just too much alike to ever really work as a couple. They’d very quickly drive one another absolutely crazy (which, to be honest, would be very fun to watch).

6 Would: Johnny And Rachel

Rachel is one of those people who really needs someone special to love her. It’s not that she’s a bad person (though she can be, at times). It’s just that she has a really hard time getting her life together, and it would take someone with a lot of patience to both deal with that and give her the support she needs to find herself.

That’s what would make Johnny such a good partner for her. After all, anyone who has been as loyal to Moira as he has would certainly be able to handle Rachel.

5 Wouldn’t: David And Joey

There are so many reasons that David and Joey wouldn’t work as a couple that it’s hard to know where to begin. Obviously, Joey isn’t gay, but it’s more than that. He’s just such a slob and, frankly, kind of an idiot (and he can be quite annoying at times).

It’s hard to imagine that the fussy (and rather snobby) David would ever be able to find it in himself to even be friends like Joey, let alone be able to get into a meaningful and lasting relationship with him.

4 Would: Stevie And Chandler

Just as there are many reasons why David and Joey wouldn’t work, there are many reasons why Chandler and Stevie would. They are very much alike in some key ways, most notably in that they both take a rather cynical and jaundiced view of the world.

They would be able to appreciate the ways in which each of them sees the world for what it is rather than what they hoped it would be, and they would, hopefully, be able to bring out the best in one another.

3 Wouldn’t: Moira And Ross

Moira is a fantastic character, and she’s a very loving wife for Johnny. However, it has to be said that she can also be more than a bit self-centered, and this means that she needs to be with someone who’s okay with that.

It’s really hard to imagine Ross, who also tends to be very self-centered and not always conscious of the feelings of others, being able to handle someone like Moira, while she would almost certainly eat him alive.

2 Would: Patrick And Rachel

From the moment that he gets into a romantic relationship with David, it’s clear that Patrick has what it takes to be the man that David needs. Unlike almost everyone else, he takes David on his own terms, and he loves and supports him unconditionally.

If anyone from that show would be able to handle someone like Rachel, it would have to be Patrick. Aside from everything else, he would be patient with her while she attempts to get her life together.

1 Wouldn’t: Johnny And Phoebe

Johnny is, in some important ways, the voice of reason in the show (which is what makes it so funny to watch how he contends with his family). While he manages to make it work with Moira despite the fact that they are so different in so many ways, it’s unlikely that he’d be able to replicate that exact scenario with Phoebe.

For her part, Phoebe would almost certainly find Johnny to be the kind of boring person that she doesn’t usually like to get romantically involved with.
