Joe Manganiello responded to Tobey Maguire's reported casting in Spider-Man 3. Manganiello played Peter Parker bully Flash Thompson in Sam Raimi's first Spider-Man. He also made a brief appearance in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3. Raimi's trilogy popularized Marvel's Spider-Man for a new audience, heralding in what is now three different iterations of the character. Andrew Garfield played Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man's two films, with Tom Holland taking over the role in 2016.
Anticipation is steadily building for the latest Holland Spider-Man film. The cast was already stacked, with Benedict Cumberbatch appearing as Dr. Strange, alongside the returning cast from the first two films. New reports indicate that Jamie Foxx could appear as The Amazing Spider-Man 2 villain Electro, while Raimi trilogy villain Doc Ock, played by Alfred Molina, is also set to make an appearance. Most interestingly, though, is the return of two more familiar faces. It has been reported that both Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire will reprise their roles as Spider-Man, but it's unclear if they're returning as their original Spideys or not.
Manganiello responded to the reported castings. Speaking to ComicBook, the Deathstroke actor expressed excitement about the casting. Manganiello, a noted comic book fan, has been known to geek out from time to time and this is no different. The actor expressed his anticipation in seeing things play out with what is becoming quite the large cast.
I am fascinated to see how all of that is going to play. I think Marvel has done an amazing job up to this point. And I know that all of those characters are in very good hands. So, I'm very, very curious to see how that will all work out if that all is indeed true.
It's safe to say fans share Manganiello's sentiment. While just about everyone can't help but get excited with this casting news, there has been a range of emotions in response to the announcements. Many are just excited to see their favorite characters from Spider-Man films past to make an appearance in Marvel's next film. Others are trepidatious. With such a large cast comes worries that the film will be overstuffed, a problem that has plagued many a Spidey sequel.
Both Raimi's Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 were criticized for being overstuffed with villains and plot, leaving little room for character development and hindering the film from feeling like a cohesive story. The movie is confirmed to be connected to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, so there is room for a two-parter here. Still, that has not entirely allayed fears that the film could be sacrificing quality for quantity. Spider-Man 3 will be an event film regardless and, like Manganiello, just about everyone is eagerly waiting to see if Marvel can pull it off.
